HomeMy Public PortalAbout1977.06.26 Letter about Runwy ClosureMegan, Idaho June 26., 1977 Chairman Airport Commission McCall, Idaho Bear Sir: This letter is written for the purpose of expressing my views to the Airport Advisory Commission and the City Council members regarding the closure of the 'dirt runway number 1 and 19 at the McCall Municipal Airport. I was quite dis- turbed to read that such steps were being considered. -This runway was the first runway constructed on the McCall Municipal Airport and the wort: was done in conjunction with the City of McCall, U. S. Forest . Service,, Brown's Tie and Lumber Company, and Johnson Flying Service. The run- way from end to end was our longest runway extending 2800' and favorably facing the normal prevailing winds which move in from the Southwest. A big percent of the frontal activity preceding summer thunder storms and winter line -squalls come from this direction. This runway contributes to the safety factor for the pilots flying light aircraft, since strong cross winds do effect the. landing of light aircraft. Since the T Uangars have been kept open for winter use, I would think this runway should be the runway you .would consider for ski operation use, if your plans are to include ski operation. Where the old taxiway and runway used to be, South and East of the new taxiway constructed in 1974, would make good building sites, T-Hangars, and future development of additional tie -down spaces. I have been flying off of the McCall Airport since 1942 and had the opportunity of serving as Airport Manager for the City of McCall the past thirty-six years. I've used this runway many, many times because of prevailing weather conditions and have observed numerous other pilots doing the same. I'm convinced that hav- ing itavailable for use over the years has prevented aircraft incidents and/or accidents. It is my firm belief that any time you close a runway already in use on an air- port that you are regressing not progressing, so I would urge you to seriously consider the pros and cons of the runway closure before making a final decision. Respectfully yours, Bob H. Fogg BHF/mef City of .A4cCa/1 , '11 MCCALL, 1DAHO 83638 BOX M July 4, 1977 Mr. James W. Hardy Airport Commissioner P. O. Box 869 McCall, Idaho 83638 Dear Jim: The Airport Advisory Board met Monday, June 27, 1977. Topics discussed were the Gravel Runway closure and a location for Mr. Dorris's Fixed Base Operation. The Advisory Board recommends the Gravel Runway remain open until such time an alternate runway can be constructed to provide the level of safety now in existence by the use of existing gravel runway during adverse conditions. A letter i§ submitted from the previous Airport Administra- tion supporting the Board's view. The Board recommends Mr. Dorris's F.B.O. be located between the arergreen Air Operation and the exisitng T-Hangars, providing the city can acquire the telephone company's land. Sincerely yours, R.
