Also attending: Charles Harris (Eastham,) and Walter North (Conservation Committee.) The meeting was called to order at 10:07AM. Minutes: The minutes of the June 19th meeting were approved 5-0-0. Estuary Sampling: Carolyn reported that a full complement of samples was received from the first morning of water testing on July 13th. It was noted that some sites reported the presence of large amounts of macroalgae, and that the minimum standard for the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water was not met at 12 stations. Each of the Pleasant Bay stations will do one duplicate set of samples during this season. Ways to increase the public's understanding of the importance of this water testing program were also discussed. Freshwater Pond Water Quality Monitoring Program: The draft of the June 2017 Freshwater Ponds report on the conditions of 18 freshwater ponds in Orleans will be finalized after comments are received. The committee will base its water quality management proposals on this scientifically accurate database by SMAST. A freshwater management technology suggested by the Orleans Pond Coalition to improve water quality in Boland Pond was discussed. It was noted that OPC will need to follow the appropriate town approval process in order to implement their plan. Renters' Brochures: Carol and Betsy will distribute the Renters' Brochures and other appropriate water quality information to local Realtors. Cedar Pond: The history of Cedar Pond was recapped for the benefit of non-committee meeting attendees. The Cape Cod Commission gave its written support for the 2013 Cedar Pond Management Plan. The town will request an exemption from Development of Regional Impact requirements, and will also need a public hearing on the management plan. Water quality remediation work in Cedar Pond is pending final approvals. Future Agenda Item: Briefly discussed was the need for a full-time scientist to serve as a director of environmental compliance for the town This person would be on the town payroll to handle environmental issues currently being taken care of by a number of town departments and volunteer committees.
