Estuary Sampling: Carolyn reported that a full complement of samples was received
from the first morning of water testing on July 13th. It was noted that some sites
reported the presence of large amounts of macroalgae, and that the minimum standard
for the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water was not met at 12 stations. Each of the
Pleasant Bay stations will do one duplicate set of samples during this season. Ways to
increase the public's understanding of the importance of this water testing program
were also discussed.
Freshwater Pond Water Quality Monitoring Program: The draft of the June 2017
Freshwater Ponds report on the conditions of 18 freshwater ponds in Orleans will be
finalized after comments are received. The committee will base its water quality
management proposals on this scientifically accurate database by SMAST.
A freshwater management technology suggested by the Orleans Pond Coalition to
improve water quality in Boland Pond was discussed. It was noted that OPC will need to
follow the appropriate town approval process in order to implement their plan.

appropriate water quality information to local Realtors.
Cedar Pond: The history of Cedar Pond was recapped for the benefit of non-committee
meeting attendees. The Cape Cod Commission gave its written support for the 2013
Cedar Pond Management Plan. The town will request an exemption from Development
of Regional Impact requirements, and will also need a public hearing on the
management plan. Water quality remediation work in Cedar Pond is pending final
approvals.
Future Agenda Item: Briefly discussed was the need for a full-time scientist to serve as
a director of environmental compliance for the town This person would be on the town
payroll to handle environmental issues currently being taken care of by a number of
town departments and volunteer committees.
