I inspected the above -ground areas of the trees visible from the ground looking for indications of health or structural problems. Due to advanced decay and declining health, three trees should be removed. The remaining trees generally look good. Pruning needs for this year are low. Dead, broken or rubbing limbs 2" diameter or larger should be removed. String trimmers are damaging the trees at 3265 Ocean Boulevard. 3265 has had on- going damage that is likely to kill the four most severely damaged trees on that property. The grass around the trunks should be sprayed with an herbicide such as Roundup® around the base of the trees to maintain a clear area of at least 18" around the trunks. A thin laver of mulch (about 2" thick) should be used to help reduce turf incursion into this area directly around the trunks. Mulch should not be piled up on the trunks. The two green buttonwood trees on the east side of Town Hall are declining. The most recent treatments for nematodes were more than a year ago. The treatments should be repeated as needed. There are no cures for nematodes, but treatments to limit the severity of the infestation are possibly beneficial. We may also see improvement with regular applications of fertilizer. You asked me to give my opinion regarding the cause of death. In my opinion severe improper pruning is directly the cause of death of this tree. There is ample evidence that the tree was topped several times in previous years, most likely during the early summer months. The topping lead to the production of a massive number of sprouts, coming from stored carbohydrates. The last topping forced the tree to sprout using up its storage reserves leading to death. There is no indication of disease or chemical contamination. If you have any questions Registered Vonsultir)j Arborist G A moi, .L1 s vOnultin° r.
