ROBERT E. SMYLIE, GOVERNOR
CHET M O U L T O N, D I R E C T O R
September 8, 1966
Am you prepare to set your levies .for the coming year, the State Department
of Aeronautics wis es to calla special air port Lead to your attention as
well as offer a joint 50/50 participation project to your airport -service -
locality to help remedy she situation.
Idaho has only 13 comounities with over 5000 population. Of this total,
only 12 offer regular taxi or rental oar oervi eos to the industrial,
business, or recreational visitor. lie can't help wonder hOw the aerial
vieitora get around at Idaho's 190+ other airports.
Any community or geographical area must navo good transportation to prosper
andcreate commerce. As we in Idaho begirt oor second century of progress,
we will rely entirely upon the cepabilitiea and utility aervices of three
forme of transportation; namely, rail, highway, and air. Nothing can be
more important to the, future than to see each serve every community or
locality with special emphaeia plaoed on the establishment of a very long -
ran a industrial development complex which incorporetes all three to enhance
the community's future development.
Nothing frustrates the company or business executive more than to uee the
company airplane to keep appointments in your city, or any other city, if
he .fines the tie -down area grown rap to weeds; no services or attendant; no
telephone; no ground transportation; and more detracts:mg than aeythtng else,
no sense of security over the prospect of leaving a $25,000 to $100,000
airplane parked overnite without ary supervision against doboible-vandaliam
or tampering bo unfaniliar hands.
What Idaho really needs at so many of our county -seat or intermediate
category of airports is a rseidert-oaret for wno would live on the field
and perform certain pre-deterninod service and maintenance chorea in lieu
of rent. Someone w old thus always be at tand and lights would be in
evidence at night to deter and thwart vandalism. Additional services
could then be added such as a "unicorn" arrival radio; a telephone; oarport
and uniform courtesy car; night -guard light over the aircraft parking area;
a public waiting and restroom; auxiliary fuel; etc.
This Departmnt of Aeronautics is now prepared to jointly participate with
you in ouch a uniform, packaged project which will do more to upgrade ;our
airport than any other coneiderotion we nnow of . . and at a cost to each
of us of no more than 32500 to ,7 3000.
