A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD
EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE NATIONAL CHILDREN'S STUDY
WHEREAS, today's children are faced with a variety of chronic conditions
stemming from the complex interaction of environmental exposures and genetic factors;
and
WHEREAS, many of these chronic conditions such as asthma, autism, obesity,
and neurodevelopment difficulties, are increasing in prevalence, burden, and cost both
nationwide and locally; and
WHEREAS, research consistently shows that health and development early in
life can have strong, persistent effects, so understanding the factors and influences that
shape children's health and development is critical to helping them grow into healthy,
successful adults; and
WHEREAS, the National Children's Study is a collaborative effort between the
National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the National Institute of
Environmental Health Sciences, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, and
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; and
WHEREAS, the National Children's Study will examine the effects of
environmental influences on the health and development of more than 100,000 children
across the country from before birth until age 21, making it the largest and most
important study of children's health and development ever conducted in the United
States; and
WHEREAS, Lynwood has been randomly selected along with 13 other Los
Angeles County neighborhoods as the initial County area participants; and
WHEREAS, the data generated by the National Children's Study will form the
scientific cornerstone for children's health policy for generations to come.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD DOES
HEREBY FIND, ORDER, AND RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The City of Lynwood supports the National Children's Study and
promotes its implementation within the City.
Section 2. The Lynwood City Council commends the exemplary research
efforts of the National Children's Study and its leadership in furthering the common goal

Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its
adoption.
