City Hall Council Chambers Call to Order: At 10:16 a.m. the Women's Commission meeting for April 13, 2011 did not take place due to a lack of a quorum. Pledge of Allegiance: None Invocation: None Roll Call: None Members Present: Vice-chairperson Alicia Fombona Commissioner Irene Garcia Member Absent: Chairperson Pamela Taylor Staff present: Jamel Goodloe, Staff Liaison Serena Coulson-Johnson, Minutes Clerk Certification of Agenda Posted: Agenda was duly posted Board Orals: None Public Orals: None The Women's Commission next regularly scheduled meeting is to be held at 10:00 a.m. , on Thursday, May 10, 2011 Lynwood City Hall Council Chambers. � i I 1 City of Lynwood Lynwood Women's Commission Special Meeting Minutes Tuesday, March 10,.2011 10:00 A.M. City Hall Council Chambers Call to Order: Chairperson Taylor called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. Pledge of Allegiance: Led by Commissioner Fombona Invocation: Led by Commissioner Garcia Roll Call: Chairperson Pamela Taylor Commissioner Irene Garcia Commissioner Alicia Fombona Certification of Agenda Posted: Agenda was duly posted Election of Officers: Chairperson Taylor opened the meeting with a motion to elect a nominee for a Vice- Chairperson. Commission Fombona was nominated Vice-Chairperson and voted in as such. A motion was made by Chairperson Taylor and second by Commissioner Garcia. i All agreed. Discussion on ideas and event planning: Ms. Coulson-Johnson passed out a list of ideas for event planning created by the � previous Commission. � Vice-chairperson Fombona suggested that the first workshop be for young women ranging from ages 15 to 20. Chairperson Taylor stated that the previous Commission was in the process of preparing an event for the students in June of last year. She , stated that this did not work, because the students were preparing for their prom and graduation. The Commission agreed on planning workshops for different age groups. The categories discussed were from ages 15 to 20, 20 to 35 and 35 and older. It was also suggested to have a senior group. ' � Chairperson Taylor suggested the topic for the 15 to 20 age group, should be "Dress for Success". Vice-chairperson Fombona stated that this could be approached in two ways. � She suggested getting someone from a major company to come and do a mini fashion � show. She also suggested getting the students and young women involved by allowing I i I z them to participate by modeling for the show, and also model some of their own clothing. Commissioner Garcia asked if there could be a 1 5t 2" and 3` place winner and if the Commissioners could do the judging. Mr. Goodloe answered yes, if the Commissioners agree. Chairperson Taylor stated there are still gift bags left over from the previous event. Mr. Goodloe stated that the clothing the models wear should be for different occasions and this should give them an idea of how to dress for success. Chairperson Taylor suggested focusing on the workshop for the students and young women first. Vice-chairperson Fombona stated that for the second category age group will range from 20 - 35. Mr. Goodloe suggested the topic for this group should be "Time ManagemenY'. He stated that this should help women get ahead in business as they learn to manage their time. Vice-chairperson Fombona suggested that the topic for "Planning for the Unexpected" be for the next category, ages 35 and older. She stated that things such as wills, living trusts, and insurance can be included in the topic. She suggested the possibility of a workshop include ail three topics. Vice-chairperson Fombona suggested having one hour workshops throughout the year. Commissioner Garcia suggested having a guest speaker at each workshop. Mr. Goodloe stated that grant deeds and quit claim deeds should be a part of the topic above. Mr. Goodioe stated that it would be a good idea to have a speaker come the workshop and explain the subject to the group. Commissioner Garcia stated that many people think that their loved ones will be okay, so there are no proper documents to put in place. Commissioner Garcia also stated that sometimes the inheritance will go to the state. She stated that it may take years to process these types of documents, and by having them in place everything well go directly to the beneficiary. Mr. Goodloe mentioned that the Commissioners may want to add a few thoughts on how to take care of oneself when getting older. He stated, such as; healthy living, and exercising. Vice-chairperson Fombona suggested incorporating Mr. Goodloe idea of healthy living and exercising into the topic, "Health and Nutrition". Chairperson Taylor stated that this is a great idea. Commission Garcia stated that in her neighborhood people exercise by walking. Mr. Goodloe mentioned to the Commission regarding a program that the city has called "Cash of Chunkers". He shared with the Commission things that he does to encourage his team. Vice-chairperson Fombona suggested having success stories on how well the women are doing while exercising. Mr. Goodloe suggested creating a bulletin and an article to advertise their events. He stated the Commissioners can write the article and he can create a design. He stated that the article can be sent out every week, bi-weekly or once a month. Vice- chairperson Fombona suggested sending the article out once a month. She stated that 3 the article should be prepared and sent out in advance. She also suggested that maybe it can be included in the Lynwood N' Perspective newsletter to advertise upcoming events. Chairperson Taylor stated that she can get in contact with Hub City and the adult school to try and get the teachers of the ROP program to assist in helping them get students to attend the event. She stated that hub city has members from Huntington Park, South Gate and Lynwood. Commissioner Garcia stated to keep in mind that many of the students are graduating in May. Mr. Goodloe asked the Commissioners what they had in mind for the event. He stated that the events are usually held at Bateman Hall. Vice-chairperson Fombona suggested � having the event on a Friday. Chairperson Taylor stated that Bateman Hall is booked on Fridays. It was suggested to check with Bateman Hali and see if a Thursday is available. There were three tentative dates suggested, Thursday, June 2, 9, and 16. Commissioner Garcia asked how many guest would be invited. Chairperson Taylor stated that they don't have a count yet, but she will speak with some of the teachers and maybe get a number for the guest list. Chairperson Taylor stated that the event for the students and young women may be less expensive if they model their own clothing. Vice-chairperson Fombona stated that some will model their own clothing. Ms. Coulson-Johnson stated that the students will be learning how to dress for success, and they should model different type of clothing that would be appropriate to wear for various occasions. She stated such as: every day wear, school, church, and work etc. Vice-chairperson Fombona suggested getting five or six models to do the modeling and � also try getting a company to donate clothing to model. Mr. Goodloe suggested showing the students why it is important to be successful. He stated, and also show � them what is appropriate and not appropriate to wear on a job interview and give a little background history on the importance for dressing for success. Vice-chairperson Fombona suggested making a video regarding business professionals that will inspire wbmen. She also stated that she can do some research on businesses here in Lynwood that would possibly do a short video in different fields such as in the medical field, teaching etc. Mr. Goodloe stated that they can put a video together, and he asked the Commissioners to set a date for the video to be made. He stated that we ; have ali the equipment is needed for the making of a video. He also suggested having a narrator speak on the video and put the spotlight on the students and young women, so it will be inspirational for them. Chairperson Taylor asked would this video be made for the 15 to 20 age group or the 20 to 35 age group. Vice-chairperson Fombona suggested showing the video to the 15 � to 20 age group. She stated that it could even be shown in their classrooms as an educational tool. . ., 4 Board orals: Commissioner Garcia stated that she has a concern regarding information shared at the Block Watch meeting. She stated that the information that she received regarding the dismissal of some of the Commissions/Boards were not accurate and that there was a lack of communication. She stated that was one of the reasons why she did not attend the February 9, 2011 meeting. She stated that she failed to call the city and confirm the information, but by then the Women's Commission meeting had already taken place. She stated that she was later told that if she was on a Commission/Board she still needed to attend the meeting. She stated that things of this nature happen wlien there is a lack of communication. Vice-chairperson had no remarks. Chairperson had no remarks. Public orals: Mr. Goodloe stated, regarding Commissioner Garcia's concerns regarding the Commission dismissal, that as far as he knows, the Women's Commission is to continue meeting until they have been giving a final notice to discontinue. He suggested that the topic for the event "Dress for Success" be placed on Apri'si agenda for discussion. Chairperson Taylor asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting. Vice-chairperson Fombona made a motion to adjourn the meeting and second by Commission Garcia.
