FOR FOR
MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL
SANDY BALDONADO
Occupation: Attorney at Law and Member, Claremont City Council
I am seeking re-election to the Claremont City Council so I can
continue to advocate for an open, inclusive, fiscally sound, vibrant
Claremont.
I have participated in our community for more thar~ 35 years as a
teacher at Vista School, a graduate of Claremont Graduate University,
an elected Water Board Member, a mother of four Claremont High
School graduates, an active volunteer with many community
organizations, and as an attorney and Claremont business owner.
Past councils have successfully preserved and maintained Claremont's
unique character. We must continue to seek progressive, creative
solutions for ensuring financial stability, protecting and building on
Claremont's past, and forging Claremont's future. To accomplish this
we must encourage all of Claremont's citizens to become active
participants in the city's governance.
I believe my experience as your councilmember, community volunteer,
and member of Claremont's business and professional community will
allow me to continue to listen and respond to Claremont's emerging
needs as we move forward together into the challenging time ahead.
I ask for your vote on March 4!

JACKIE MCHENRY
When I moved to Claremont 20 years ago with my husband, Dean, and
son, lan, I found a community of educated, civic-minded citizens who
enthusiastically kept alive the tradition of New England Town Hall
meetings. These meetings were conducted by council members who
listened closely to what was said, respected diverse opinions, and
actively sought to speak with all constituents.
I want to restore that tradition. I will use the skills that I have acquired
from working with such diverse groups as the League of Women
Voters, L.A. County Grand Jury, Active Claremont, Friends of the
Claremont Library, Sycamore PFA, and more, to listen to your
concerns and help you in finding solutions. I will ensure that you have
full access to public information and will work to televise City Council
meetings. I will vote to confirm the appointments of city commissioners
based solely on merit. I will see that public funds are spent prudently
and equitably. I will work with you to develop neighborhood -friendly
projects.
I have the experience, the ability and the will to achieve these goals.
Let me work for you, Let me be your voice on our city council.

MIEMBRO DEL CONCEJO MUNICIPAL
JACKIE MCHENRY
electores.
Yo quiero restablecer esa tradici(~n.
ayudarles a encontrar soluciones.

FOR
MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL
PETER YAO
Age: 58
Occupation: Corporate Manager
I came to Claremont with my parents and sister more than 40 years
ago. Many generous citizens of our new city helped us to share in the
American Dream. Part of my decision to run for City Council comes
from a desire to help maintain and extend that spirit of generosity.
Claremont must continue to be a welcoming place for people with
diverse backgrounds and viewpoints who will enrich the larger
community. I am committed to a city government accessible to all
citizens.
My highest priority is to preserve Claremont values. I will work to
sustain our city as a safe haven for all citizens; to maintain our
community as an ideal place to raise a family with good schools, parks,
sports, youth, family and senior programs; and to balance the city's
economic growth with a commitment to historical preservation and
environmental conservation.
I will encourage greater citizen participation to help set public meeting
agendas, review city projects, and appoint city commissioners. I have a
proven track record in corporate management, and I am eager to help
bring Claremont to its full potential. EXPECT GREAT THINGS!

FOR
MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL
JEFFREY P. CARMAN
Occupation: College Student/Intern
Claremonrs bright future begins now. Together we can make it better
than ever, while maintaining our rich heritage and preparing for
tomorrow
Isn't it time to hold CaI-Trans responsible for their broken promises
about the new freeway? Are the new downtown streetlights too
powerful? Do the street sweeping machines even work, or do they just
push the dirt around? Isn't there a city ordinance against gasoline-
powered leaf blowers? Has the proposed Sports Park been planned
properly? And why are our open spaces disappearing so rapidly?
Some of these issues and problems are not complex, they have merely
been ignored. Others, unfortunately, have been mishandled. It is time
for someone to start paying attention, and I am the person for that job.
If Claremont's current council members cannot fulfill simple civic
obligations, they should be replaced. It is time for a new generation,
the next generation, to take on these important responsibilities. I
appreciate your vote. With your help, we can make Claremont better
than ever. Join your fellow citizens who are saying, "Our Man Is
Carman! Our Man Is Carman!"

Yo

ALGIRD G. LEIGA
Age: 69
Occupation: Councilmember/Retired Executive
Our city is in excellent shape. We have a balanced budget, Iow crime
rate, thriving village, award winning youth and senior programs, new
community center and excellent parks. Our home values continue to
appreciate. As your council member, my priodty is to keep Claremont
the best place to live in California.
My involvement in community and regional organizations helps
influence policies important to Claremont. I support growing the
wilderness park rather than developing sensitive hillside areas. One
reason for seeking another term is to open the light rail Gold Line from
LA to Pasadena in 2003, and complete the planning and start
construction of the extension to Claremont by 2005.
My business management and government experience will help
maintain our financial health through improved efficiencies and
business development. Emergency preparedness and public safety is
a high priority in these troubled times. I support cooperation with our
school district for youth programs and school safety.
It has been my honor to serve you on the City Council to help preserve
all that is great about Claremont. I will continue to listen to your ideas
to plan for a better future for everyone. I ask for your vote on March
4th.

FOR
MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL
ZEPHYR TATE-MANN, J.D.
Occupation: Educator, Business person, Law Graduate
For this election, Claremonters must wisely vote for a candidate who
can improve the management of our City Government. I believe I can
represent the residents without any conflict of interest and can respond
to the will of the people with a sensitivity that is not currently
demonstrated by the incumbent City Council members. My political
and volunteer activities are numerous. If elected, I can make a
significant difference in the relations between the City Council and our
Claremont residents. I support the ideals of representative and
participatory democracy at the municipal level. Our current elected City
Council members can no longer continue to be unresponsive, and
ignore the voice and will of our residents, as they have in the past. The
residents of Claremont have a feeling of not being represented. I want
to change that image of our City Government and be an elected
official, who will represent the people. We need to make a wise choice
at the polls, elect City Council members who will be responsive, and
listen to the voice and will of the people they represent. Please vote for
me as the people's best choice on March 4th, 2003.

· Claremont resident for 32 years.
· Local business owner. Currently paralegal for. local law firm.
· Volunteerism is the cornerstone of my life including the Peace
Corps/Ethiopia in the 60s.
Claremont continues to be an oasis in the midst of the Los Angeles
megalopolis. As a participant in many community organizations and as
a council member I have diligently and cooperatively worked to
maintain the high quality of life in Claremont. My concern for and
regional involvement in matters of public safety, transportation, human
services, community services and infrastructure planning and
maintenance have enhanced the quality of life that benefits all
Claremont residents.
It has been a challenging and rewarding experience. More challenges
are ahead. The state budget crisis and homeland security threats
impair local governments' abilities to control our communities'
destinies. I have the knowledge, the enthusiasm, the positive attitude
and the energy to serve our city as a reelected member of the city
council. I ask for your vote on March 4 and look forward to continuing
to work with residents to make quality contributions to our wonderful
community.
