TO: MEMBERS OF CITY COUNCIL` "" FROM: MAYOR PRO TEM, PAUL RICHARDS SUBJECT: AD-HOC COMMITTEE ON RACE RELATIONS I want to thank each of-you for your support in approving the specia2 Ad-Hoc Committee on Race Relations. Since your approval ., I have worked to formalize the concept as discussed at our previous meetings. . : Introduction • As we are all aware, Lynwood is an ethnically and:racially . diverse city. In order for us to survive as a community we must avoid the pitfalls that are, typically associated.with such diversity.. The lack of trust between and among various factions , of our City can be devastating. We must strive to build respect and understanding throughout.the , entire Lynwood community. The Ad-Hoc Committee on Race Relations - will help us to achieve that end. It is necessary that the Committee involve a cross section of City Council, City , Employees, Clergy, Businesses and Citizens at large. The • , Committee should reflect a wide range of racial, ethnic end cultural diversity. ' Goals . The Committee will convene for the express purpose of fulfilling I the goals eet forth by City Council. Attached for`your consideration is a list of recommended goals which cover key areas°of concern. They are designed to steer the Committee to ;. i the ultimate'result of a document outlining steps that can be taken to eignificantly improve human relations in Lynwood. i . I I i . Selection of Membere I would urge that Council utilize the following sources for selection of inembers. o City Council (2 members) o Clergy (5 members) ' o Businesses (5 members) o Youth (5'members) o Community-at-large (10 members) It fs recommended that Council select its two representatives immediately and appoint one to serve as chairperson of the Committee. The balance of the seats would be filled by application to Council and appointed at the meeting of September 5, 1989. Conclusion 6 Recommendations The establishment of special committee to review the, status of race relations in Lynwood is a critical step in preserving this great community we call Lynwood. We should all look forward to findings and recommendations that will be forthcoming from this effort. The fact that we have moved this far is indicatiye of the courage Council has continuously displayed over recent years. I It is recommended that Council adopt the suggestions incorporated in this report and appoint two members from City Council this evening to serve, i Sincerely, I i' Gi%o^' PAUL H.
