IN THE COUNCIL CHAMBERS OF THE CITY AALL, 11330 BULLIS ; ROAD, CITY OF LYNWOOD, CALIFORNIA � _ _ � � REGULAR MEETING OF THE COMMUNZTY AFFAIRS COMMISSION JUNE 21, 1989 The Community Affairs Commission met in a regular session on June 21, 1989 at the Council Chambers of the City Aall, 11330 Bullis Road, Lynwood California. (Agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown Act). Commissioner Litsinger called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. Present Excused i Bette Espeseth Yolanda Bays I Ann Fields Barbara Newton , David Litsinger Marion Madden Lucille Walker Staff present: Gerald Forde & Carol de Jesus. ' The minutes of the May 17, 1989 meetinq was approved. � BUSINESS ZTEMS: 1. AN OVERVIEW ON COMPLETE COUNT CONII�IITTEE I Ms. Patricia Moore, Census Community Awareness Specialist ' gave a slide presentation and overview on Census Awareness. ; The Census, according to Ms. Moore, takes place every ten years. It provides population counts and its population information is used in allocating state and federal funds. Each community gets a fair share of its dollars and a right of representation in the Congress. ! Ms. Moore further indicated that the Census is a major resource for businesses and marketing firms in selecting locations for the marketing goods and services. i � .. . � � 2. COMMUNITY/LEGISLATIVE LUNCHEON FOR MENTAL HEALTH Chairperson Litsinger submitted an extensive report on the Legislative Community Luncheon for Mental Health he and two other members of the Commission atteraded on May 19th at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. Cozunissioner Walker commended the speakers for their eloquent speeches and she was very impressed with the manner the function was organized. 3. UPDATE ON STATUS OF LYNWOOD LIVING, THE NEWSLETTER Mr. Forde explained to the commissioners that the Council has been entertaining a more positive approach with the public relations program. Staff is working with representatives from The Wave Inc., (company that purchased the old Lynwood Press) to work on a more frequent distribution of information to the public through the said papers. COMMISSIONERS' ORALS ' The gang and crime problems in the City stands out as the most crucial issue that warrants immediate attention. The commissioners have raised and discussed several cases during the past meetings that require input from the Sheriff's Department. I Mr. Forde had invited a representative from the Sheriff's Department � to attend the meeting but due to an unexpected schedulinq problem, the Sheriff's representative was unable to be present. , Mr. Forde will try to follow up the representative for the next commission meeting. , There being no further business, the.meeting adjourned at 6:05 PM. The next meeting is scheduled for July 19, 1989. . � � i
