Chairperson Lee led in the Pledge of Allegiance. , Roll Call of Commissioners Present: Chairperson Errick Lee Vice-Chairperson Isadore Hall Secretary Shiniqua Green Commissioner Lourdes Cas[ro Co�issioner Margarita Salinas Commissioner . Shevonda Green Commissioner Cameron Green Co�issioner Ralph Davis IV Co�issioner Cornecia Banks Co�issioner Marquisha Flowers Co�issioner Sylvia Ramirez SCHEDULED MATTERS Ralph Davis certified the Agenda Pos[ing by the City Clerk. I A motion was made by Co�issioner Hall approving the minu[es of the regular meeting date of May 3, 1989, with a second by Commissioner Castro and all in agreement. CORRESPONDENCE: None MONTHLY STAFF REPORTS Ta'avasa Mamea, Facility Supervisor, Lynwood Community Center, gave an oral overview of current recreation programs and the Teen Center. Copies of the I Su�er Edition of the Lynwood Living were also issued to the Commission. REPORT ON RECREATION AND PARKS BUDGET- 1989-90 Ralph Davis indica[ed that Chairperson Lee had inquired abou[ a budget for the Youth Co�ission. As a result of this staff is preparing an item for Council requesting a Youth Co�ission budget asking for the following: I A. Monthly Stipend- #25/per Commission x 12 meetings =#300.00 per Commission B. Business Cards - $20/per Commission C. Minutes Clerk -$50/meeting x 12 meetings = 3600.00 I I ' I � �. Page 1`vo � • • .,�r c DISCUSSION ON VARIOUS COMMITTEE ASSZGNMENTS Ralph Davis reminded the commission that they were to select sub co�i[tees from.those discussed in their meeting on May Sth. Lourdes Castro moved that the Co�ission concentrate on filling the four (4) sub committees, Education, Social/Cul[ural/Recreation, Government and Employment initially due to [he regular Co�ission at[endance. This motion was seconded by Ralph Davis and ' approved by all. The four (4) Sub Co�ittees were filled accordingly: 1. Education- Chairperson Sylvia Ramirez Members . Ralph Davis, Marquisha Flowers, Errick Lee and Shevonda Green 2. Social/Cultural/Recreation- Chairperson Isadore Hall Members . Ralph Davis, Sylvia Ramirez, Margarita Salinas and Marquisha Green 3. Government- Chairperson Lourdes Cas[ro Members Cornecia Banks, Isadore Hall, Errick Lee and Shevonda Green 4. Employmen[- Chairperson Cameron Green Members . Joe Araujo, Errick Lee, Margarita Salinas and Shiniqua Green DISCUSSION ON YOUTH COUNCIL GUIDELINES FOR MEMBERSHIP Ralph Davis stated that this particular i[em was tabled from the April 13th meeting. After re-affirming ihis issue, the Commission decided to table this item until the meeting of July Sth. . DISCUSSION/REPORT ON PROPOSED UNITY FAIR Ralph Davis reported; that Ci[y Council has expressed an interest in honoring minorities and having a program of such. Staff is proposing a"Unity Fair" the Labor Day weekend of September 1-4th in the Lynwood City Park. This program will consist of enterta3nment, a fair and cul[ural involvement from the various groups and agencies in the community. After discussing the program intent, the Commission expressed an interest in getting involved in the Unity Fair. Ralph Davis indicated; he would then get back with the Co�ission on [he status of the Un3ty Fair at the next meeting of the Commission, July Sth. PUBLIC ORAL COMMUNICATION None COPII4ISSION ORAL COMMUNICATION Isadore Hall reported; that Victor Wilson has been accepted to study in Africa „ through [he "Operation Crossroads" Program. Victor is seeking donations for his trip. Information on where to send donations vill be obtained by the next meeting. Isadore also sta[ed; he would be going to Detroit representing Los Angeles in the N.A.A.C.P. ACT-SO Program. Isadore will be competing in the oratory category of this national program. r ;� ' _-� Page .Three ' • � , F � . Lourdes Castro reported on her involvement with the General Plan Intern Program. Lourdes stated; that the program has been quite rewarding with seminars and field trips to the two (2) companies contracted with the city. Ralph Davis IV announced; that Margarita Salinas was selected Miss Lynwood ^ 89 ° and Lourdes Castro was also selected to the court as a runner up. Ralph also , ' indicated; he and Sylvia Ramirez would be members of the Lynwood High teams participating in the Los Angeles Su�er Games to be held later in June. ADJOURNMENT A motion was made, seconded and all in agreement to adjourn to the next regular scheduled meeting for Wednesday, July 5, 1989 in Room 1{2 at Bateman Hall, 11331 Ernestine Avenue, Lynwood.
