U Proposal Opportunity from Better World Books Better World Books, to whom the WFPL gives discarded and donated books, has announced that it will accept grant proposals through its LEAP (Literacy and Education Program) for library projects that address the literacy needs of underserved populations in a community. Project Literacy would like to submit a proposal to fund a foundational English literacy class for those immigrants in our community who are non -literate in their first language. We anticipate that most members of this class would be Pakistani women who never had the opportunity to go to school. We arc currently trying to help some members of this group in our Beginner 1 class, but their learning needs and challenges are different from the literate members of that class and they struggle to make progress. If we are successful in getting funding, we would hire a teacher with the skills to teach basic literacy along with ESOL, as well as pay a Pakistani Project Literacy "graduate" to serve in an outreach and support capacity. The proposal is due on April 5, 2013.
