SUMMARY STATEMENT:
Staff has compiled the City’s costs for support of Winter Carnival 2012. Attached are detailed reports from the Police Department, Public Works Department (including the Airport), and
the Parks Department. The total cost of the City’s support for Winter Carnival 2012 was approximately $24,000. In addition, local option tax funds of $4,000 were provided directly to
the Chamber of Commerce to fund Winter Carnival fireworks.
2012 was the first year for a bull riding event, on the second weekend of Winter Carnival. The City agreed to assist with the event when the original venue fell through at the last minute.
The City spent approximately $7,100 supporting this event. Most of those costs were in preparing and cleaning up the site, as well as assisting with the set-up of the arena and pens.
These costs were higher than anticipated.
A representative of the Chamber of Commerce will be available to present information regarding Winter Carnival. The Chamber has provided the attached letter, dated March 10, 2012, as
well as a comparison of website activity in 2011 and 2012. Additionally, a number of emails are attached, expressing support for continued City funding of the Winter Carnival fireworks,
and the importance of activities on the second weekend.
