YOUTH COMMISSION CREATED
The Lynwood City Council at their February 7, 1989 meeting,approved the
formation of a Youth Commission.
The purpose of the commission is to provide youth a viable means to partake in
local city government and provide input to areas that effect youth.
A two tiered program was presented by Councilman Paul Richards. The first tier
would consist of the Youth Commission. This commission would be responsible for
fulfilling goals and objectives as defined by City Council. The composition of.
the commission would be: 3 members age 11-14, ,4 members age 15-18, 2 members
age 19-25. This nine member body would serve two terms or until they reach
, the age limit of the category under which they were appointed.
The second tier would consist of a Youth Council. The council would be open
for all youth in the City. This council would be convened monthly by the
Youth Commission, for the purpose of exchanging ideas and information relative
to youth.
Goals of the commission as defined by the Council are:
1. To provide youth with the opportunity to make recommendations relative
to policies that affect their lives.
2. To expose and educate youth relative to the nature and scope of city
� government. . '
` 3. To provide a forum for the exchange of positive ideas and information
among youth.
4. To conduct workshops and symposiums on important issues facing youth.
5. To serve as an advisory body for City Teen Center.
' The newly created commission will be under the jurisdiction of the Recreation
and Parks Department. Any youth wishing to be considered for appointment to the
Youth Commission and meeting the described age requirements, should attend the
initial meeting of the Youth Council. This meeting is scheduled for Thursday,��
March 2, 1959 at 4:00 p.m. in Room li2 of Bateman Hall, 11331 Ernestine Avenue.
. Applications for consideration of appointment to the Youth Commission will be
. distributed at this time. Completed applications should be returned to the �
' �� Recreation and Parks Department, 3798 Century Blvd., Lynwood by Tuesday, March
14, 1989. Appointments will be made by City Council at their March 21,,1989
meeting.
