Brewster COA Building Maintenance Some of you may have noticed that some of the hardwood flooring on the main level is beginning to splinter and crack. And if you consider the age of this building, it is understandable that it is time for us to try to bring it back to its earlier beauty. Therefore, during the week of Monday, July 29th to Friday, August 2nd, we will be having the hardwood floors in the front foyer, 1st floor Outreach Office and the 1st floor large room stripped and sealed. In order to make this project go smoothly, ALL activities on the 1st floor will be cancelled for that week. Our Outreach Office will be open in their 2nd floor office. The 2nd floor activities will go on, but your ONLY access to the 2nd floor will be the back staircase. You will not be able to use the front staircase or the elevator. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the office. Thank you in advance for working with us to improve the building. “New to Medicare” Seminar Thursday, August 8 6:00 pm Brewster COA, 1673 Main Street Are you turning 65 soon? Their telephone number is 508-827-6725 or check them out at: smiles@mobiledentalhygiene.com Emergency Preparedness Begins with You! Federal agencies, like Ready.gov, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are valuable resources for emergency preparedness. When you face a natural or man-made emergency, try to stay informed through radio, TV or the Internet. In some cases, however, cable, electric and cell phone service will be disabled, making communication nearly impossible. The National Safety Council recommends the following general precautions that apply to many disaster situations: ● Make sure to have a family communication plan in place; all members of the family should review and practice the plan. ● Have all family members' and other important phone numbers written down or memorized. ● Have an emergency kit in your car and at least three days of food and water at home. ● Be sure to store all important documents – birth certificates, insurance policies, etc. – in a fire-proof safe or safety deposit box. ● Assign one family member the responsibility of learning first aid and CPR. ● Know how to shut off utilities. The CDC also reminds us that maintaining community health resilience through social connectedness is an important way to respond to and recover from an emergency. People are more empowered to help one another after a disaster when community members have been regularly involved in each other’s lives. Simple things, such as getting to know your neighbors and finding out who might need help in a disaster and learning practical preparedness can help you weather the storm! BE WELL! LIVE STRONG! LIVE LONG! Brewster, MA Sightings from the Poop Deck Flyboys - “Off we go, into the wild blue yonder.” “We grew up at the best possible time, a time when the world was getting better, not worse. We are the Silent Generation – ‘The Last Ones’. More than 99.9% of us are either retired or deceased, and feel privileged to have ‘lived in the best of times.’” Lois Krafsky-Perry The Korean War was coming to a close when these guys had just completed their junior year at Passaic High School. Everyone was looking forward to their “Big Man on Campus” senior year. During that year someone came up with the idea that we might want to consider enlisting for a four-year hitch. The guidance counselors were expending all their energies on those potential “Ivy” students and not the least bit interested in average. The parents of these guys had probably not gone beyond an eighth grade education, were one generation removed from the old country, had suffered through the depression years and had more important things on their minds, like making a living. We are the sons and daughters of the Greatest Generation. So, there they were on September 7, 1954, standing next to a Greyhound bus parked in front of the recruiting center at 1006 Broad Street, Newark, New Jersey. That bus would take them to begin their basic training at Sampson Air Force Base, Geneva, New York. When boot camp was completed they all went separate ways to different schools; aircraft mechanics school, radar techs, radio techs, clerks, air police, etc. Everyone made it home on leave for their first Christma s, except Anthony, (kneeling lower right) involved in a fatal automobile accident while at radar school at Keesler AFB, Biloxi, Mississippi. At the end of the four-year enlistment you were processed out, mine at Westover AFB, Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, and received some real guidance from an officer, probably a lifer colonel. “Son, you have served your country honorably and earned an entitlement to the G.I. Bill, Public Law 550, which means your college tuition will be subsidized by Uncle Sam. Take advantage of it and don’t waste it!” He would have made a great guidance counselor! We listened and earned our college degrees. On October 26, the Passaic High School Class of 1954 will celebrate its 65th year class reunion. The “Flyboys” will be there, but only three of the seven are left. To those who have gone before us, Anthony, Tommy, Al and Joe, our classmates and brother airmen, Ave Atque Vale, (Hail and Farewell), you are not forgotten! Peter R. Scheffer (“Life is Good!”) - Aim High!! P.S. For those of you who may be wondering, yes, Joanie Carfora was there on September 7, 1954.
