City of Lynwood was held September 10, 1990 in the City Hall Conference Room. '(The agenda was duly posted as prescribed by • the Brown Act). , Chairperson Mary Wright called the meeting to order at 5:32 p.m. Members in attendance were Mary Wright, Rev. C.C. Coleman, Bill , = Cunningham; Ada McZeal, and Ann Fields. Staff present were Jim . , Givens, Roy Bufanda and Pat Roach. The minutes of the meeting of August 13, 1990 were approved as ' distributed. � SCHEDULED MATTERS - - — - , A. TOPICS FOR UPCOMZNG LYNWOOD SHOWCASE ' Mr. Jim Givens had the following suggestions for upcoming Lynwood Showcases: ' 1. Interview with Andrea Hooper 2. Back to school shopping report . 3. Did you know? (Evelyn Wellsj 4. Health tips ' 5. Safety feature (Halloween) � 6. School Activities (Sports, etc.) 7. Senior Citizens' Activities , • 8. Repart on Trolley 9. Summer on Review (Highlights of Summer Showcases) � 10. Graffiti Day commercial � . 11. Job k'air commercial .. i -Chairperson Mary Wright suggested the Mr. Givens bring � a list of suggestions for commissioners to choose and prioritize from for following showcases. i I -Commissioner Ann Fields brought the name, address and ; phone number of an original rascal: DeForrest Covan ! 5545 Carlton Way . Los Angeles, CA 90028 ; (213) 469-5483 Mr. Givens will contact Mr. Covan in order to possibly i ' feature him on a future showcase. ' .i ' i 1 � � � , . _ • � B. UPDATE ON AUDITIONS FOR HOST/HOSTESS Mr. Jim Givens showed the commissioners the video of the auditions for,host/hostess. TYtree candidates were auditioned by having'them conduct an interview with Mark Flores regarding information on the Dial-a=ride program. The names of•the candidates who participated in the auditions are: Ed Robinson, Katie Miller and Lorna Hawkins. The fourth candidate ( , Williams) has not been able to be contacted. Chairperson Mary Wright suggested, and the Board approved to give all candidates an oportunity to be part of the Lynwood� _ Showcase. This will allow the candidates to participate in the . areas which they identify with the most. For example, Ed Robinson could do features on our youth, Katie Miller on senior, citizens' activities, and Lorna`Hawkins on issues that concern . the community. Another advantage of having more than one' host/hostess is that when one is not available to do a certain assiqnment, another host/hostess could cover the assignment. _ ' It was also decided to keep auditions open, and to try to advertise for a bilingual host/hostess. " Commissioner Ann Fields inquired about sending host/hostess'. to training seminars. C. GANG AND DRUG AWARENESS FORUM . A special 10' hour live program (Gang and Drug Awareness! , Forum) was presented on Sunday, September 16, 1990, noon to 20 - p.m. by Continental Cablevision (Channel 28). The purpose of the' telethon was to raise awareness to local problems and to explore solutions. P2r Councilwoman Evelyn Wells' suggestion, Lynwood's. � participation was shown in the form of a video which demonstrated several programs which help young people stay off of gangs and - drugs. The programs featured on the video were:. The Teen Center, Project,Impact and the Sheriff's Department Youth ," Athletic League., Mayor Henning participated in the discussion panel. It was reported that the participation was outstanding . and that it was a success event overall. ' � - • PUBLIC ORALS , . -Mr. Jim Givens stated that he would do a presentation/recommendation at the next meeting regardinq the issue of finding funds to pay city staff who are working with the Cable Company. 2 .:.•: � � -Commissioner Cunningham inquired about the equipment at the School District, and it was said that the equipment is obsolete and that the staff working on the Lynwood Showcase would probably not be able to use it anymore. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 8, 1990. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 6:50 p.m. � � � , i • i � i i . 3 ' f
