ADJOURNMENT � � I � , i � � I I , . • � M � � � _ COMMUNITY ACCESS ADVISORY BOARD � Minutes for the Meeting of � ' August 13, 1990 The regular meeting of the Community Access Advisory Soard of the, City of Lynwood was held August 13, 1990 in the Council Chambers' (The agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown Act). � Chairperson Mary Wright called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. Members in attendance were Mary Wright, Rev. Coleman, Bill , Cunningham, Ada McZeal, and Ann Fields. Staff present were Jim Givens, Roy Bufanda and Pat Roach. The minutes of the meeting were approved as distributed. SCHEDULED MATTERS A. EVALUATION OF SHOWCASE N[TMBER IV: � Mr. Jim Given informed the commissioners that Perry $rents had completed all corrections for Showcase Numher IV. � ' B. SCHE�ULE OF SHOWCASE NUMBER V: � The commissioners agreed on having Thursday, August 16 at i 8:30 a.m, as the review day for the Showcase. C. TOPICS FOR SHOWCASE NUMSER V: , � Mr. Jim Givens sugqested the following topics and.asked the� , commissioners to choose from triem: t " 1. History of Lynwood, Part II , , 2. Earthquake Feature #2 (2nd of 3) � 3. Interview with Leighton Aull abaut his business ' � 4: Dial-a-ride � 5. Don Morris' activities: ! ; a. Mervin Dymally Park Dedication b. Youth Gang Services Concert ; " i - Mr. Givens also suggested to feature a commercial to promote, � the Unity Festival (Sep£ember 1-2, 1990). � � Commissioners decided to feature all of the above except �2 ' ; (Earthquake Feature #2)• � I � 1 � ; ' ( i j .. • � � COMMISSIONERS' IDEAS & SUGGESTIONS FOR UPCOMING LYNWOOD SHOWCASE - Chairperson Mary Wriqht sugqested to present the difference between the Code Enforcement Department and the Sheriff's Department. - Commissioner Coleman stated that the street sweeper service for the city is not enough , the community needs to get involved. Perhaps the city can develop an awards program to encourage citizens to work with the city in order to keep the streets clean. - Commissioner McZeal suqqested to feature the Recyclinq Program. Chairperson Mary Wright stated that it would be a good idea to include this topic as soon as the City makes a decision on the program. - Have works of art alonq the Railtransit. Identify young artists and have them paint murals to decorate along the Railtransit instead of painting graffiti on the walls. Perhaps there can be an art competition. - Mr. Givens said that his department is organizing an Anti-graffiti Day. He suggested to bring the community together and show the importance of keeping the city clean. - Chairperson Mary Wright was inquiring about having con- nections among the Blue Line, RTD bus, Trolley and Dial-a-ride. Mr. Givens will find out about the possibility of having connecting stops among the above., - Independence Day -Mr. Roy Bufanda suggested Olvera Street as a site to videotape. Chairperson Mary Wright suggested to use videotape from the 5 de Mayo Celebra- tion to get ideas for the Independence Day feature. It was also suggested to have a hispanic/bilingual host/ho'st for this feature. D. UPDATE ON AUDITIONS FOR HOST/HOSTESS: � Mr. Jim Givens informed the commissioners that there are � four candidates, two from Lynwood and two from Compton. (Two ; college students, Lorna Hawkins, and Katie Miller-song &' dance). Auditions will be held on Thursday, August 16, Room i �/2, Bateman Hall. Durinq auditions, candidates will interview , Perry Brents. Videos of the interviews will be brought to i the to the next meeting for Board to choose from. Mr. Givens commented that the host/hostess will be the primary voice for the Showcase, although staff will still take some' part. He also stated that it would be a good idea to � select two host/hostesses, in the event that one is not available I when he/she is needed. ' � 2 � . � � r D. D0�'1t76Y -- Continuing on the momentum generated from the 48 hour Long Beach gang and drug awareness teleth�n in July, Continental Cablevision is devoting its community channel to a Gang and Drug Awareness Forum on Sept. 16 from 12noon to lUpm. The forum Will include civic leaders, lacr enforcement agencies, counselling services, youth groups, parents and kids. It aill be conducted as aR'open discussion with interviews, telephone call-ins and documentary footage. Residents are encouraged to call in at any point in the program to share their experiences or suggestions. All cities served by Continental Cablevision aill receive the program on "Community Cable" Channel #28. Cities included are Downey, Bellfloaer, Paramount, LynWOOd, La Mirada, Santa � Fe Springs, MayWOOd and Bell Gardens. Compton residents can � vieW the program on cable channel � Like the Long Beach telethon the purpose in not to raise ' money but to raise awareness. The Long Beach program, a joint venture of the Press Telegram and Simmons Cable vas very successful and generated over 1000 phone calls. General Manager of Continental, Vic Pascarelli expressed his � commitment to the pro,ject, "This is an excellent way for the community to utilize cable TV to serve its greater needs. We are very dedicated in helping to looY, for solutions to problems Within our community." This project is not Continental's first effort into gang I �, prevention. An'Emmy Award and an ACE AWard Were presented to i a Continental produced educational program called "Gangs - Facts Every Parent Sho�!ld Know." Also airing on the Continental community channel is a regular series about gang � violence and youth problems called "Drive-by Agony." �� This Gang and Drug AWareness Forum concludes an entire sreek of programming focuaed on the community during Locel �!' Programming Week from September 9- 16. This week is being �� honored by cable systems across the nation with the theme "Local Cable Programming - TV That Hits Home."
