Adjournment: Motion to adjourn to the next regular scheduled meeting on May 2, 1990, at the Teen Center, 11409 Birch St. Lynwood, CA 90262. � I � ' � � . .;.-. � � CITY OF LYNWOOD ` RECREATION AND PARKS DEPARTMENT YOUTH COMMISSION MINUTES MARCH 7, 1990 , OPENING CEREMONIES ' The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Chairperson Errick R. � Lee. The following Commissioners were present: Ra1ph Davis IV Errick R. Lee ' Marquisha Flowers Frankie Murphy Cameron Green Sylvia Ramirez Shiniqua Green Jennifer Zavala Isadore Hall Michelle Zavala � - The following Commissioners were excused: Cornecia Banks Shevonda Green The following Commissioners were absent: � Miguel Lara DaVanna Wells Evette Medlock LaShonda Wells Tatanisha Sanders Allison Wills � Commissioner Davis made a motion to excuse Commissioner Banks, and � Commissioner Green from the March 7, 1990 meeting. The motion was -� seconded by Commissioner Aall with all in agreement. SCHEDULED MATTERS Ralph Davis certified the posting of the Agenda. , A motion was made by Commissioner Hall, with a second by Commissioner Davis to the approve the minutes of the February 7, 1990 meeting. � I I, STAFF REPORTS: PERSONNEL � I Jim Given reported that Lynwood Recreation and Parks Department is � � currently advertising for Teen Center Specialist. The position would , pay between $8 -$10 per hour, and the qualified candidate would work an i average of 35 hour per week. The closing date for this position is i March 26, 1990, staff hopes to have the new Teen Center Specialist on ! board by April. � �� TEEN CENTER ACTIVITY REPORT: � � i Jim Given stated that the Drop-in activity at the Teen Center was improving even though the video games are no longer available. � ! A tutoring program is currently being offered at Lynwood Library on �� �' , i � � � � Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. There are currently a total of fourteen students (14) involved in the program at this time. The Teen Center's Electric Football program operates on Tuesday and Saturday and is being run by Steve Atkinson. At the present time there are thirty (30) people .involved in this program. � � Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m, the Teen Center offers a Ninetendo Challenge to all Teens of Lynwood. "_. Jim also stated that Recreation and Parks is in the process of •. purchasing a pool table, and a stereo system for the Teen Center. � YOUTH ACTIVITIES: Jim announced that Basketball season has ended, the SEMAA Tournament is approaching fast. The Basketball Banquet will be held on March 17, 1990 at 6:00 p.m. Baseball registration is currently being taken and will end on April 13, 1990. The All City Track Meet will be held on April 7, . 1990 at the Lynwood High School Track Meet from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. PLAYGROUND ACTIVITIES: � The playground will be hosting a dance on March 9, 1990 at Bateman Hall from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., all youngsters between the ages of 7 and 13 are invited. Registration for Cinco de Mayo wi11 begin March 19 and continue until April 27, 1990. � The Ham Park Exercise Program will begin late in April. It will run Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Ham Park is officially open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m, and Saturday and Sunday 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. YOUTH COUNCIL GUIDELINES REPORT: I Commissioner Murphy requested a copy of the Youth Commission Guidelines. I Jim Given showed the new Youth Council Membership Cards to the Youth Commission and explained that.they would be available to Youth Council members at the cost of two dollars ($2.00) per card. � YOUTH COMMISSION APPOINTMENT DISCUSSION: I Commissioner Murphy suggested to the Commissioners they hold a education ' � forum in late April or early May. He recommended that the following representatives be invited: � State Representatives � � - . . County Representatives I School Board Representatives ' Superintendent of Schools � � City Council i Student Representatives from School Sites I . � � � PTSA/PTA Commissioner Murphy stated the purpose of this educational form would be to pose questions to these representatives regarding the education of our youth, and suggestions for better education. Commissioner Lee asked staff to handle all of the arrangements and let the Commissioners know what they have decided upon. Commissioner Lee also asked the Commission to feel free to turn in any suggestions to staff they may have regarding the forum. After further discussion a motion was made by Commissioner Davis, seconded by Commissioner Green, with all in agreement, to allow staff to proceed with plans on an educational forum. YOUTH COMMISSION ORALS: Commissioner Hall asked to have discussion of a bike-a-thon on the next agenda to research this topic for a future fundraiser. Commissioner Lee asked for an accountability of Teen Center funds, a mirror be placed in [he corner of the Teen Center to allow staff to see outside of the building from the inside of the Teen Center, and that curtains be hung in the room with the safe.
