The adjourned meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission was called to order by Chairman Burlingame at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 1981 in the North Meeting Room of the City Hall, 5938 N. Kauffman Avenue, Temple City, CA. 2. ROLL CALL PRESENT: UNFINISHED BUSINESS ABSENT: Commissioners Adams, Caswell, Crump, Shaw and Burlingame. Non e ALSO PRESENT: Victor B. Kobett, Director Parks & Recreation Department 4. TOUR OF CHURCH RECREATION FACILITIES Chairman Burlingame stated that the purpose of the meeting was to tour the recreation facilities of two local churches to ac- quaint them with the design, function and use to assist them in their study relating to the best use of State Bond and Grant Funds presently available to the City. The Commission immediately left for the Church of the Nazarene, 9953 Las Tunas Drive, Temple City. The Commission received a guided tour of the gymnasium by a member of the Congregation. The guide explained that the floor was a rubber base material applied over a concrete slab and all court boundary lines em- bedded in the material. The floor is the same as installed in the gymnasium at Pepperdine University. He explained they have experienced some problems with the floor, but are generally satisfied with the installation. The floor, he sta- ted, has good spring to it and good for basketball and volley- ball. He felt the cost was comparable to wood but required less maintenance. Normal cleaning or washing plus recoating every six months which can be done by a member of their main- tenance staff. Chairs and tables are permitted on the floor and food can be served in the gymnasium. The facility had a dual lighting system of incandescent and mercury vapor lights. Once the mercury vapor lights are fully burning, about 10 to 15 minutes after turning on, the incandescent lights are turned off to conserve energy. The building also had a large stage built on the side of the building, rather than the end. This design provided for five various sized rooms upstairs and restrooms. Storage, showers and locker rooms were located on the main level and a large basement, with an elevator, contained nine rooms. Additional improvements planned include carpeting and bleachers. Estimated cost of the building was $800,000. The tour ended at 6:55 p.m. Parks and Recreation Commission -2- May 26, 1981 The Commission immediately walked next door to the First Bap- tist Church, 6019 Baldwin, Temple City. A member of the Congregation welcomed the Couauission and pointed out the features of the Facility. The building contained a full - size basketball court and could accommodate two volleyball courts. The floor of the building was vinyl tile over a concrete slab. The building also contained a stage at one end, showers and locker rooms, a fully equipped kitchen and entry lobby. The design of the building made the facility appear as a large community room rather than a gymnasium. The guide estimated the building was constructed in 1965 or 1966 but did not know the cost. The tour ended at approxi- mately 7:15 p.m. It was the decision of the Commission, because of personal schedules, not to tour Live Oak Park or discuss the General Plan, California Parklands Act of 1980 or discuss previous tours of nearby Parks and Recreation Facilities as planned, but to continue discussion on these agenda items to June 3, 1981. ADJOURNMENT 5.
