Tr'JRI`I'TEN COI~~VItTNICATIONS:
communication was received from the Zos Angels s County
Zeague of Municipalities inviting the ~atu~.cil to attend their next meet-
ing to be held at Beverly Hills on Thursday, June 15th, dinner to be
served at 6:30 r. Tvi. `t'here bei.na no o}~jectian, the Iti~ayor ordered tl~
cammunic~ation filed, sug^esting that any one of the Council that r:os-
sible can, attend.
A camr.^unication was received from the County Counsel's of-
fice by Gordon Boller, Deputy, to the effect that cl~~.ims have been. filed
wi th the county by F. J. tiilright and Merman Goldberg for refunds on ac-
count of aver-collection in ye=ar 1929 in Acquisition and Improvement
Districts 15 and 17 because of erroneous assessed valuatiax~submitted
by the County of Las Angeles fora lesser amount than really existed
and therefore the rate was establishe;~ in excess of actual requirements
on actual assessed valuations and therefore X8.721.99 over collection
was received from said bistricts, and the amount of the claims are for
the amount exacted from the claimants by reason of the rate being higher
than necessary and a l.e~gal argument in support thereof has been addressed
to Dynwaod's City Attorney, stating that they have refrained from allow-
ing the claims, and if same are not paid they are assured that suit will
be instituted, requesting that if the Council ti~ishes to reject the claims
that they sa notify the County, and they ~i.ll take like action, but stat-
ing that they expect the City to appear and defend in their behs~,lf the
action which will then fallow.
City Treasurer Reed addressed the Council stating that he
recommends that the refund request be rejected as he believes it to be
a tax racket, and that he has conferred wit~i the City of South Gate
who are also interested in the matter, and they take the same po._~ition
and will help resist any action to force collection. TuTr. Reed also
stated that the scare that the law fire: that is threatening suit raised,
that the levy was not legal because the County should have set the rate
in lieu of the City is without foundation as the Board. of Supervisors
also included all our districts in fixing their rates, a,nd the two dis-
trict in a,uestion were also included by the County.
City Attorney Hubbard addressed the Council advising that
he believed that the Council should net reject the claims, but should
ignore the matter and take no action in the matter whatsoever.
l'hereupan it was moved by Councilm~.n Snyder and seconded
by Councilman vJright that the Council go on record o}~~posing any action
in the mat -er of said claims by the County Counsel's office, or by the
County of Zos Angeles at this time.
