They will also be distributed to children who do exceptionally well in school throughout the year. - C. CITIZEN FORUM - Beechwood and California Letters were mailed to the residents of Beechwood and California Avenues, inviting them to attend the meeting of July 17, 1991 to express their concerns regarding problems in their neighborhoods. There were no residents present at the meeting, and it was suggested to invite them again. It was also suggested to help them get a Block Watch Program started in their neighborhood. It was mentioned that a representative from the Sheriff's Department should be present at all meetings, to answer any questions commissioners or residents might have. PUBLIC ORALS - Bette Espeseth went to the Baseball Awards Ceremony last Saturday, July 13, which had an attendance of about 200 children. Also, went to the Auto Show on Sunday, July 14, and to the Senior Citizen's Luncheon on Tuesday, July 16. - Lorna Hawkins announced the Enshrinement Ceremony of Councilwoman Evelyn Wells and Senator Ralph Dills on Saturday, July 20, 199I at 3:00 p.m. in front of Bateman Hall. - Lucille Walker commented on the Los Angeles Times newspaper article, which talks about the City of Lynwood's 70th Anniversary. - Ann Fields commented on Compton Community College's Book Program, which helps low income students obtain their books for school. (Agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown Act.) Commissioner David Litsinger called the meeting to order at 5:02 p.m. � Commissioners present were: Yolanda Bays, Bette Espeseth, Ann Fields, Lorna Hawkins, David Litsinger, Barbara Newton, and Lucille Walker. Staff present were Deborah Jackson and Pat Alvarez. The minutes were approved as distributed. SCHEDULED MATTERS A. CITIZEN OF THE MONTH AWARD PROGRAM It was suggested to add to the list of requirements to .. qualify for the Citizen of the Month Award Program the following: -what type of volunteer work, when, where and length of time volunteer work has been done It was also suggested to have a separate list of qualifications for the commission members to have as a basis to select candidates. Staff will work on a draft application for the Citizen of the Month Award Program, so that commission members can review and discuss at the next regular meeting. B. SHERIFF'S AGENDA Deputy Ortega, from the Crime Prevention Center was present at the meeting and discussed the following items: - - He announced that Sgt. Slawson is now in charge of the Crime Prevention Center. - The Summer Youth Program has been very successful, helping young people develop skills in order to find jobs on their own. Boys get job experience working for the Parks and Recreation " Department, and Maintenance Department, among others. Girls work in the offices and learn secretarial skills. Girls are also 1
