JG/dy a:dywpp.o . i I � ' ' � � � � CITY OF LYNWOOD YOUTH COMMISSION MINUTES OCTOBER 16, 1991 OPENING CEREMONIES , The City of Lynwood Youth Commission met in a regular session at ,. the Teen Center, located at 11409 Birch Street on the above date at 6:06 p.m. Chairperson Boykin was in the chair. Vice Chairperson Banks, Commissioner Airada, Agaalii, Contreras, • Perez, Trigo and Zavala answered the roll call. Commissioner Cameron Green, Shiniqua Green, Hardin and Wells did not answer the roll call. Jim 6iven, Recreation Superintendent, .certified the posting of the Agenda by the City Clerk. It was moved by Vice Chairperson Banks, seconded by Commissioner Perez, with alZ in agreement, to approve the Minutes of October 2, 1991. Sim Given, Recreation Superintendent, introduced the newest commissioner, Fernando Airada. INFORMATION ITEMS ' Program Reports A handout will be available at the next meeting regarding upcoming programs in the Recreation & Parks Department. Leo Rodriguez, Facility & Program Supervisor reported on the upcoming Teen Center Anniversary, October 17, 1991 at 6:00 p.m. ' Curb Painting Report Leo Rodriguez, Facility & Program Supervisor gave a brief report on this item. Chairperson Boykin had concerns regarding the -.- charge being a donation. � Commissioner Trigo wanted to know how often they would be painting the curbs. Jim Given stated exact dates had not yet been determined.� � I Commissioner Airada felt the residents should be able to donate � whatever amount they wanted. � '�, i . , � � Commissioner C. Green and S. Green arrived at 6:30 p.m. It was moved by Commissioner Trigo, seconded by Commissioner � Zavala, to have the frequency of red curb paintings be two • weekends per month and money be used for scholarships and staff recommend amount to be charge. The motion carried with the vote as follows: AYES: Agaalii Contreras � C. Green ' S. Green ' Perez Trigo Zavala NAYS: None ABSTAIN Boykin Banks Softball Game Diana Escalante, Recreation Specialist, stated the first practice would be Saturday, October 26, 1991. Commissioner Zavala stated she would not be at practice. Picnic in the Park � . � Leo Rodriguez, Facility & Program Supervisor, reported the Picnic � in the Park would kick off the National Red Ribbon Week on Saturday, October 19, 1991 at Dymally Park from 11:00 - 4:30 p.m. � �' Concert Issue Regional Program i � Diana Escalante stated she was not able to reach Eric Moore, Concert Promoter, regarding this item. Commission Orals Commissioner Agaalii had questions regarding softball practice and game dates and when positions would be selected for players. � Commissioner Shiniqua Green apologized for being tardy. Commissioner Perez congratulated Fernando Airada on his appointment as a new commissioner. . � � Commissioner Trigo congratulated Fernando Airada on his appointment as a new commissioner. � Commissioner Zavala congratulated Fernando Airada on his appointment as a new commissioner. Vice Chairperson Banks requested that an agenda item regarding two meetings per month be put on the next agenda. She also requested that suggested dates for curb painting be available at the next meeting. - Chairperson Boykin requested new name plates with the same lettering as the new commissioners. She also requested that all � commissioners planning to attend the anniversary celebration _ . arrive at 5:45 p.m. and dressed appropriately. She congratulated Fernando Airada on his appointment as a new commissioner and would also like to see two meetings per month on the next agenda. Adjournment It was moved by Commissioner S. Green, seconded by Commissioner Zavala, with all in agreement to adjourn to the next regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, November 6, 1991. City of Lynwood � . � � i The City of Lynwood Recreation and Parks Department currently offers a wide variety of programs to benefit its youth, aduTt and senior citizen populations. YOUTH SPORTS AND CLASSES Sign ups for the flag football and volleyball programs for youth between the ages of 8 and 14 are currently taking place. Games will - begin in October. The cost is � per youth per sport and includes awards and insurance. # �• SO The lOth annual Recreation Youth Basketball Camp will begin on November 19, 1991. Different skills for levels, Beqinner to Advanced will be offered. Sign ups begin on October 28, 1991. The fee is $20.00 per youth and covers T-shirt, awards, insurance and 'I weeks of intensive instruction. Youth are encouraged to register and take advantage of the many specialized classes that the city is offering.(see attached chart) NATATORIUM SWIM ACTIVITIES Recreational swimming for youth and adults will be offered at the Lynwood Natatorium during the following hours. ' � � 2 September 9, 1991 - October 1, 1991 Monday/Thursday 3:00 p.m. - S:OO p.m., 7:00 p.m. - 9 :00 p.m. Friday 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Saturday/Sunday 12:30 p.m.. - 2:3.0 p.m. October l, 1991 - November 9, 1991 Monday 7:0o p.m. - 9:00 p.m. , Tuesday/Thursday 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Saturday 12:30 p.m. - 2;30 p.m. Admission for youth (6 months - 17 years) is 75 cents and $1.00 per adult. Swim Classes for youth and adults alike will be offered at the Natatorium in three session of 3 weeks each. Registration for these classes is currently being taken at the Natatorium. TEEN CENTER The Teen Center, located at 11409 Birch St. offers youth 18 and younger, games, tournaments, arts and crafts, tutorial assistance, job placement assistance, and a place to belong. The Center also ' offers various special interest clubs where.youth may share their experiences. The Teen Center is open Monday through Friday 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 12:00 noon - 5:00 p.m. Membership for the Teen Center is $2.00 annually, which includes admission to the Teen Center and all its activities, and membership in the Youth Council. The Youth Council is an advisory board to � Lynwood Fall Proqram 1991 . � � ; 3 � the Youth Commission and meets on the second Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. PLAYGROUNDS An after school recreation program will be offered, beginning October 14, 1991 at the following schools; Lindbergh, Lincoln, Mark ' Twain, Washington, Abbott, Wilson, Lugo and Ham Park between the hours of 2:45 p.m. - 5:15 p.m. These programs offer youth trips, sports, games, and arts & Crafts in a wholesome and safe environment. ADULT SPORTS Adults are invited to participate in the City's adult sports programs. Sign ups for Adult softball for Men, Women and Coed leagues are currently being taken. Registration is currently being taken at the Parks and Recreation Office. The fee is $15 per individual or $150.00 per team, plus $20.00 refundable forfeiture fee. There will be an all-star game during the season. The fee for this is an extra $25.00 per team. SERVICES FOR SENIOR CITIZENS ' The City offers Dial A Ride services to senior citizens 55 years and older and the handicapped. Services includes transportation to the market, doctor visits or appointments. Reservations must be Lynwood Fall Proqram 1991 . , , � � 4 made at least 3 days in advanced by calling 886 - 0411. Fee is .50 per round trip. Dial-A-Ride Hours Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Weekday office hours 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Saturday 10:0 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Sunday 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. A Senior Citizen lunch program is offered Monday through Friday at 11:15 a:m. at Bateman Hall. Suggested donation is $1.50 per meal. . Bingo is offered every Wednesday from 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. at Bateman Hall. The Mature and Golden Years program offers seniors 55 and over informative, leisure, support groups, and inexpensive group travel and tours to exciting places and special events. SPECIAL EVENTS , The Recreation and Parks bepartment will be offering the following special events during the months of October and November 1991. Teen Center Anniversary,- October 17, 1991, The Teen Center will celebrate its 2nd Anniversary. Lynwood Fall Proqram 1991 . . � � 5 Red Ribbon Day -" Picnia in the Park"- October 19, 1991 This event encourages youth to say no to drugs. The day will begin with entertainment, picnic games, pony rides, and a barbecue. Many well known entertainer such as Blair Underwood from the television show L.A. Law, Cliff Winston from, the radio station, The Beat (KBET), and the X three will be performing. The picnic will take place at Mervyn M. Dymally Congressional Park (Pepsi Playpark areaj from 12:00 noon - 4:00 p.m. Annual Halloween Haunt. - October 25 - 31, 1991 This annual Halloween Haunted House will take place at Ham Park between the hours of 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. The cost is $1.00 per individual. The annual Halloween carnival - October 31, 1991, This event is hAm PA2K ' for youth will take place at °�-�--��g�� beginning at ' approximately 5:00 p.m. The event will feature games, activities; prizes, a costume parade and a costume contest. Playground Dance, - November 22, 1991, Youth enrolled in 2nd - 6th grade are encouraged to come and participate in a dance from 3:30 p.m.- 5:30 p.m. at Bateman Hall. The Cost is $2.00 per youth.
