In the Council Chambers at City Hall, 11330 Bullis Road, Lynwood. � � CITY OF LYNWOOD RECREATION & PARKS COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF JULY 28, 1992 The meeting was called to order by chairperson Julio Mendoza at 6:00 PM. The Invocation was presented by Commissioner Markovic and the Pledge of Allegiance was presented by Commissioner Martini. ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Commissioner Eloise Evans Commissioner Bette Espeseth Commissioner Robert Markovic Commissioner George Martini Chairperson Julio Mendoza OPENING CEREMONIES Harold Mattoon certified posting of the Agenda by the City Clerk. Chairperson Mendoza asked for a motion to approve the minutes of the meeting of June 23, 1992. A motion was given by Commissioner Markovic, with a second by Commissioner Evans and all in agreement. CORRESPONDENCE None CURRENT PROGRAM REPORT SUMMER DAY CAMP Mr. Mattoon stated the second session of Summer Day Camp starts in July with over 170 participants expected. CABRILLO MARINE MUSEUM i Mr. Mattoon reported that the Lynwood Natitorium is sponsoring a trip to Cabrillo Marine Museum on August 21, 1992. BOYS BASKETBALL PROGRAM � � Mr. Mattoon reported that the boys basketball Program will begin � registration on July 22 and the program will start August 24. The ' games may take place at Hosler Jr. High and then move to the new � facility. � DRILL & DRUM ! I Sign ups for Drill and Drum Squad training sessions will begin September 28 - January 25 for boys and girls aqes 5- 15 years old. I � � LAS VEGAS TRIP Mr. Mattoon reported that the L.S.A. is sponsoring a trip to Las Vegas for 3 days and 2 nights. The trip is scheduled for the Excalliber Hotel for $115. per person. It is limited to the first 42 sign ups only. PROGRAM INFORMATION Mr. Mattoon issued Department Program Information to the Commissioners. SCHEDULED MATTERS: RE-O OF COMMISSIONER Mr. Mattoon reported that it was time to elect the new chairperson and pro tem. He asked for a motion for nomination. Commissioner Mendoza nominated Commissioner George Martini. Commissioner Espeseth moved that the nomination be closed with a second by Commissioner Mendo2a. Mr. Mattoon requested to have a motion for a unanimous ballot for Commissioner Martini. Commissioner Espeseth moved that a unanimous ballot be cast with a second by Commissioner Mendoza and all voted in agreement. Commissioner Markovic made a motion to nominate Commissioner Espeseth for Chairperson Pro Tem with a second by Commissioner Martini. Mr. Mattoon requested to have a unanimous ballot for Commissioner Espeseth. Commissioner Martini moved the ballot be cast with a second by Commissioner Markovic with a majority unanimous vote. Mr. Mattoon presented a plaque to Commissioner Mendoza for Chair of the 1991/92 fiscal year. BEAUTIFICATION PROGRAM Mr. Mattoon asked the Commissioners to select a date for the Beautification Tour. The Commissioners discussed which date will be appropriate. It was agreed to tour on August 25, 1992 during the regular meeting with this being the only agenda item. The Commissioners were requested to meet at City Hall. I� COMMISSION STATUS UPDATE To be discussed at next meeting by Mr. Davis. Mr. Mattoon stated ' that this may be concerning the term dates of the Commissioners. COMMUNITY/TRANSIT REPORT I Mr. Mattoon stated the Grand Opening of the Community/Transit Center is scheduled for August 29, 1992. He stated that A. C. � Greene of the Los Angeles LAKERS Basketball Team will be our special guest. The ceremonies will start at 10:00 AM with a special walk through for the VIPs. He stated each Commission will I � i • have a booth for representation. COMMISSIONER ORAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION Commissioner Mendo2a: None Chairperson Martini: Concern for roofing of new center. He stated that tile would be appropriate for the center. He questioned if there is enough funds in the budget for new trees in the park. Chairperson Pro Tem Espeseth: Concerned about changing the name of one of the rooms at $ateman Hall to the Anne Portner Room. She stated the Unity festival was outstanding. Commissioner Evans: Stated a lot of exciting things were going on at the Unity Festival in the park. She stated the attendance would have been better if weather would have permitted. She suggests that in the future we continue to have the festival on Bullis Road. She also suggests that we use a committee and the community to handle more task. Commissioner Markovic: None ADJOURNMENT A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Commissioner Markovic and a second by Commissioner Martini to the next regular scheduled meeting on August 25, 1992 in the Council Chambers of City Hall, 11330 Buliis Road, Lynwood, California. Attended meeting with School District on the Youth Forum. I Hoated the Christmas Parade Committee meeting on July 8, 1992. Attended the Chamber of Commerce Car Show meeting. � Met with staff on the Transit/Community Center furniture. Attended Budget meeting session with City Manager and Pinance i Director. � Met with staff on the Bateman Hall revenue project. I Orientation Day for youth employees (Hub Cities Program). i Hosted a epecial Wall of Pame Board meeting. I I Attended an evaluation meeting on the Youth Porum. Attended Southern California Municipal Athletic Pederation General Membecehip meeting in Montebello. Staff research - possible Red Cross Babysitting Certification courses and scheduled the next Anti-Graffiti Paint-Out Day for Saturday, September 26, 1992. Met with Don Clay and spoke to his Opportunity Classes about the Teen Center. � Met with the Peer Counseling Class at Lynwood High School regarding the clase volunteering at the Teen Center. ProRramminR The Teen Center staff echeduled a swim excursion to the Natatorium, -.. �.appcoximately 15 teens participated. � � The Teen Center staff celebrated the 4th of July by hosting a double I feature movie, approximately 20 teens attended. � Both Youth Gang Services and Lynwood Sports Aseociation held their i monthly meetings at the Teen Center. i The Hosler Junior High School Excursion Program began. Every I Thursday and Friday, two eight grade clasaes spent their 7th period at the Teen Center. � I I � � � Recreation Proarams Conducted July 4th Fireworks bisplay. Conducted Unity Festival.
