Assocs. report by Mr. Howard Tipton, and Mr. Owen Menard presented the
preliminary report on the planning-engineering study
concerning the development of the city in relation to the
construction of the Century Freeway. Mr. Menard reviewed
the "Scope of Work" and "Preliminary Sketch Plan and
Freeway Influence Study," copies of which had been furnished'
to the City Council, Planning Commission, and administrative
staff. Points made in the report were illustrated b,y
means of projected slides which ~hcluded a rnap ~ ir~dicat%r~g
proposed redevelopment in areas disrupted by the freeway
construction.
Use of surplus land in the freeway interchange, status
of Santa Fe Avenue alignment, redevelopment of single
family residential areas adjacent to the freeway for a
high type of multiple family dwellings and of the area
immediately west of the Long Beach Freeway and south of
Fernwood Avenue for a "research and development" area
were discussed. The Manager informed the Council that
in discussing the report, the Planning Commission members
were in doubt about the use of the land mentioned as an
"R & D" zone, stating that they wish to study alternatives
such as a "hotel-motel" area. The Council also expressed
more interest in a hotel-motel area rather than an
"R & D" use. As to the status of Santa Fe Avenue, the
Manager said that a determination has not yet been made
on the Santa Fe Avenue alignment which involves city
property running through the Western Gear Company
property. A decision on the Santa Fe Avenue alignment
is needed soon as it affects the State Highway Commission's
planning of the off-ramp pattern in that area.
Following presentation of the report, the recommendations
