The patina is achieved using carefully applied chemical compounds that cause certain oxidation processes to occur on the surface of the bronze. These chemicals and how they are applied bring about specific colors and create the desired effect that we feel works best with the sculpture. The colors, which are quite sensitive to change, must be "sealed" with waxes and/or lacquers in order to protect the sculpture and its patina from the immediate atmosphere. The larger pieces, which are generally placed outside, are always sealed with a special lacquer designed specifically for sculpture. Therefore, in order to maintain your bronze patina, a thin coat of paste wax applied to the surface once or twice a year is recommended. Using a soft bristle brush (never a rag), apply a thin coat of Johnson's Paste Wax to the surface. The patina may darken as the wax is applied, but as it dries, the color will reappear. Let the wax dry for approximately one hour. Then, using a clean soft cloth, wipe your bronze until a desired glow or sheen appears. Never use household cleansers or furniture polishes that may have cleaning agents in them. They will tend to soften and pull the existing wax off and expose the patina to the atmosphere. In order to restore the luster on the wooden bases that we use on some of my pieces, a thin coat of paste wax may be applied and buffed off Some collectors may choose to let their sculpture age "naturally." In that case, no sealer is required. - Dan Ostermiller t W. T , 3d171 — . ........... g F. q u 1/ ./ t CITY OF MCCALL January 4, 2002 C (OPY Carla J.
