RESOLUTION NO. 06-56
Resolution of the Board of Directors of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District
Commending Ms. Mary Gilman for 24 Years of Service at Deer Hollow Farm
WHEREAS,the Board of Directors of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District and the City of
Mountain View entered into an agreement in 1979 to permit and encourage the City to operate Deer
Hollow Farm at Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve; and
WHEREAS,with the arrival of Mary Gilman in 1982 as the Deer Hollow Farm Director,environmental
education guru, farm animal mid-wife,teaching docent/livestock volunteer/and camp counselor mentor,
and preserve denizen, a journey of epic proportions was begun; and
WHEREAS, Mary has connected thousands of children to the natural world and to a knowledge of farm
and ranch life by sharing in their wonder,engaging them in discovery,telling stories to them, revealing
for them the history of the land and its early people, leading them on hikes, supporting a rabbit in their
arms, showing them how to harvest beans, getting muddy with them, and standing in the sunshine
together; and
WHEREAS,while the community at large has enjoyed and been educated by the efforts Mary, her staff
and volunteers, have put into making a working farm available for all to visit and providing
opportunities to meet pigs, goats, sheep, cows,chickens, rabbits, ducks, horses up close and personal;
and
WHEREAS,while Mary has toiled alongside District staff(Farm Maintenance Workers, Rangers,and
Open Space Technicians)to ensure that Deer Hollow Farm as part of Rancho San Antonio Preserve is
the best that it can be, she has also worked closely with the District's Operations Assistant to minimize
scheduling conflicts for groups/visitors to the Farm; and
WHEREAS,the District has benefited from Mary's 24/7 presence, as have all the animals she has
nursed, birthed, and cared for, farm and wild alike; and
WHEREAS,the warm and joyful laugh heard all the way from the goat barn to the Ohlone village will
long be remembered as Mary's, and will be heard as a legacy echo by all who listen.
Now THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Directors of the Midpeninsula Regional
Open Space District commends and applauds the incomparable level of passion, motivation,and
dedication that Mary Gilman has given to her leadership role at Deer Hollow Farm, and wish her
wel n the next leg of her journey into "retir ment."
