I Commissioner Herron said that she understood that there were not suppose to be pictures take at this event. So she did not understand why Friend Pearline Calderon had a camera and what taking pictures all day at the event She also thought that AARP was not mentioned on the program and should have been because of their irnolvement and work on the gifts for the mothers. , Commissioner Lewis asked if it was mentioned on the previous minutes that AARP would be on the program. , i , . Staff Liaison DeJesus told the commission that the program usually contains the City Council's names, the Commissioner's names and the Friends of the Women's Commission. She also added that it was decided at the December 14"' meeting that the baskets were going to be given at the LWC event. She did not know until the last minute whose names would go on the program. Commissioner Herron then added that it was alright she just wanted to point that out for future reference. She said that next year things would be communicated i differently so AARP can be mentioned and given more publicity. - Commissioner Lewis said that it might have just been overlooked but things would be clearer in the future. . Friend Reed suggested giving a certificate or letter of appreciation to AARP for their work and participation. She said that next year LWC can help AARP if they choose to work together again. Commissioner Herron said she would extend the invitation to AARP for next years event to see if they would like to work together again. Commissioner Lewis thought it would be a good idea to send thank you letters to all the people that helped in the event. Friend Calderon thought that the "Gifts of Love° event was wonderful she said the children, parents and commissioners had a good time. She said that she asked permission to have a camera at the event and did not take any pictures of the ' children from the Peace and Joy Center. She only took pictures of the children from the church which she had permission to do. She thought that there was a clear division with the children from the church and the children from the Peace and Joy Center. She really disagreed with the wrapped gifts. She noticed that not one LWC member or AARP member went over and acknowledged the members from the church. She thought that the food distribution was not good because the parents and i the children had to stand in line. She suggested having boxed lunches in the future ! to avoid the lines and that way the commission can pass things out and cater to the guest. Friend Reed said that there was someone from the Peace and Joy Center that i wanted her picture taken and Friend Reed took her aside and explained to her that they could not take her picture because of confidentiality reasons. She also agreed ; that there was a definite division and that the gifts should not have been wrapped she saw a report on the news regarding this issue. She agreed with Friend Calderon and said she had good ideas about the lunch boxes. ; I Friend Wendy Martinez commented that there were some good suggestions mentioned; yes children were separated but also there was a separation also in the ; fact that the children from the Peach and Joy center could not get their picture taken. ! i . . _` Since they are children they don't understand the reason why some of the children were getting pictures taken and could not. She said that a lot of things need to be taken into consideration. Friend Herron said that maybe the party can be taken to the church next time so that there is not that separation. DeJesus thought that the reason things did not go so smooth was the fact that two tacilities were assisted. Friend Calderon said that one of the parents told Councilman Byrd that because the children attend a Christian school nobody thinks that the children are underprivileged but because they go to that school some of the parents work two jobs to keep them in that school so the gifts that they were receiving might be the only gifts they get for Christmas. DeJesus thought that it would be better to assist one center and maybe do something on a small level for a second center like take toys to the facility. Commissioner Lewis also said that if the commission wanted to add a second center it could be done a different time of the year like Easter. Commissioner Herron then told the commission that AARP does something for the mothers and the children from the Peace and Joy Center for Easter. DeJesus said it would be east to bring a small celebration to the school . Commissioner Lewis told the commission that KB toys are going out of business and it was a good idea to send them a letter asking for toy donations; she also said that they should send a letter to Mattel. Friend Wendy Martinez told everyone that now was a good time to solicit for donations. Commissioner Lewis then asked Wendy if she would like to be head of a committee for donations. She suggested big companies like Magic Johnson. Friend Martinez said that she had a contact from the "Toys for Tots" program that gave her some toys that were left from this year that could be saved for next year. Commissioner Lewis said that the more letter that go out the more children that can be assisted. Friend Calderon asked for clarification on soliciting toys. I
