HomeMy Public PortalAboutBrewster School Committee -- 2019-04-25 Minutes Brewster School Committee ' ~ Thursday , Aril 25 2019 ` h 4 1 Brewster Town Hall ,.. , Present for the Committee : David Telman, Kristen Callahan, Marie Enochty, and Jessica Larsen ' Present for the Administration: Thomas Conrad, Giovanna Venditti, Keith Gauley, and Joanna Hughes Call to Order Chair Telman called the meeting to order at 6 : 05 p . m . Citizens Speak None PRIORITY BUSINESS Administrators ' Reports Principals ' reports were included in the packet. Jessica Larsen asked that future calendar dates be included in the Principals ' reports so that school committee can see upcoming events . Superintendent Conrad recognized Principal Joanna Hughes and her staff for doing a fantastic job with the bus situation . From beginning to end, Principal Hughes did a great job managing a fluid situation and he thanked her very much. Her professionalism and great effort was tremendously appreciated by everyone involved. He reported that he attended the Wellfleet town meeting and has more town meetings to attend in the near future . He distributed a flyer on a presentation that will take place at Nauset Regional Middle School on May 8th at 6 : 00 p . m . regarding "Vaping. " He indicated that this is a big concern of the Wellness Committee . The presentation is to help the community and parents better understand the problem of vaping. FY19 Budget Ms . Venditti reviewed the expenditure reports with the committee highlighting items with significant movement. The Stony Brook budget has a balance of 452,985 . The balance at the Eddy Elementary School is $20, 993 . She reviewed line items with movement. She explained line item 7097, SN Out-of-District Tuition . The variance is due to a change in students ' needs; inclusive of a 1 : 1 which was not budgeted . Reclassified expenses to Circuit Breaker: F18 CB Funds $ 60, 175 ; and FY19 CB $43 ,280 . In addition, a new student was added since last month ' s reporting reflecting an increase of $37, 616 . Expenses totaling $ 6,380 were reclassified to Grants since last month ' s reporting . Educational Vision — Superintendent Conrad indicated that he saw a number of parents and some board members at the educational visioning forums . Dr. Patti Grenier facilitated the forums and about 50 people attended . He indicated that they are collating all the information that was received from the forums . Dr. Grenier will present the findings to the school committee for further discussion at a later meeting. Policies — Wellness, Tobacco Use Students , and Tobacco Use Staff — 1" reading Chair David Telman reviewed the policies . He indicated that the Policy Subcommittee made a few edits and approved these policies at their last meeting . Motion : On a motion by Marie Enochty, seconded by Jessica Larsen it was voted unanimously, 4-0, to approve the policies as written for a first reading . (Wellness, Tobacco Use by Students, Tobacco Use by Staff) Superintendent ' s Evaluation Process — The Superintendent reviewed the process with the committee and informed them that he will send his evidence electronically that pertains to the 4 standards and 3 goals . There is a Union 54 meeting on May 1St when Gail Briere will review the forms and process with committee members . Brewster School Committee Minutes April 25, 2019 [ 1 ) REPORTS AND INFORMATION Preschool enrollment — Principal Gauley reported that Kindergarten Orientation was held and 66 students have registered . Kindergarten Screening is May 21 and 22 . Cape Cod Collaborative — Jessica Larsen reported that they are working on the evaluation of the Executive Director. PTO — Kristen Callahan reported that there is an Ice Cream Social scheduled on April 28 from 2 : 00-3 : 30 p .m . The PTO is meeting tonight after the school committee meeting. School Council — Keith Gauley shared that the School Council is reviewing the survey results and working on the next steps . Policy — No report Substance Abuse Task Force No report Building Needs Assessment Subcommittee — No report Wellness Subcommittee — No report Strategic Plan Subcommittee — Jessica Larsen reported that the Strategic Plan Subcommittee is discussing core values . The Superintendent indicated that this is a great subcommittee but the work will take more time than initially thought . They meet every other week on average . The subcommittee consists of school committee members, teachers, retired teachers and is facilitated by Dr . Maxine Minkoff. Approval of Minutes Motion . On a motion by Jessica Larsen, seconded by Kristen Callahan, it was voted 4 yeas, to approve the minutes of March 21 , 2019 . Adjournment On a motion by Jessica Larsen, seconded by Kristen Callahan, it was voted unanimously 4-0, to adjourn the meeting at 6 : 30 p .m . , subject to payment of bills . Submitted by, Ann M.
