ADJOURNMENT I I i I � � � i I � � - � � ::� REGULAR MEETING OF THE COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION • SEPTEMBER 21, 1988 The Community Affairs Commission met in a regular session on September 21, 1988 at the Council Chambers of the City Hall, 11330 Bullis Road, Lynwood California. (Agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown Act). Commissioner Litsinger called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. Present Excused I Betty Espeseth Yolanda Bays + Ann Fields � David Litsinger � Barbara Newton Lucille Walker � Marion Madden � Staff present: Gerald Forde, Carol de Jesus � I Chairperson Litsinqer made a motion to approve the minutes of � August 17, 1988 meeting. All in favor. Motion carried. j � Mr. Forde introduced Fernando Gutierrez, a new staff inember of ; the Administrative Services. I i i BUSINESS ITEMS: I DID YOU KNOW NEWSLETTER ARTICLE i Commissioner Ann Eields made a motion to move the discussion of , the newsletter article towards the end of the meeting. All in � favor. Motion carried. j I I � I I � � �t JTPA YOUTH VIDEO PROGRAM PRESENTATION Mr. Douglas Robinson, Personnel Officer of the City, made a presentation on the JTPA activities. Mr. Robinson explained to the Commissioners that during the past summer, the Ad Hoc Committee of the City of Lynwood has established a demo project geared towards training youth (ages fourteen and up) as an alternative for gang violence. This project consisted of a period of eight weeks training for youth in the development of their media skills. The goal of this program is to enable the young people to produce video programs in the future with least amount of supervision. The City gave $13,500 to fund this program to cover expenses such as staffing, lease of the van, shirts, hats, supplies, etc. The facility that was being used for traininq was the American Cable Studio in Lynwood. Out of the six (6) participants who joined this program, five (5) had successfully completed training. The Commissioners commended Mr. Robinson and his staff for having done a good job on this program. They hope to see the continuance of this program. Commissioner Litsinger expressed a wish that this program could be extended to the High School. He also offered to contact big production companies for field trips. Commissioner Fields offered to contact Marla Gibbs, television celebrity of 227. � PERFORMING ART PROGRAM OF LYNWOOD HIGH SCHOOL I A Mr. Thomas Phillip IV received an invitation from the � Association of International Cultural Exchange inviting the Lynwood High School Performing Arts group to participate at the International Youth Music Festival in Vienna, Austria. Mr. Phillips requested Chairman Litsinger to help the group on this I endeavor. Chairman Litsinger will further look into this matter and will get back to the commissioners. � I I NEWSLETTER ARTICLE OF ...DID YOU KNOW? � The commissioners had selected the Ham House as the first topic I to be featured in the "Did You Know " section of Lynwood's quarterly newsletter. Mr. Forde indicated that he will do some research on i the Ham House and will discuss this at the next meeting. i Commissioner Fields suggested that it would be a good idea to � feature the five kids who have successfully completed the JTPA � training program. I I . i � I , .. � � �:, COMMISSIONER ORALS: Commissioner Espeseth informed the commissioners that the Parks and Recreation Commission has a Home Beautification Award program and awards are being given quarterly. - Commissioner Litsinger named some outstanding athletes who graduated from Lynwood and Mr. Forde mentioned that it would be a good idea to list down the names of these graduates and feature them at the next "Did You Know" article.
