ADJOURNMENT � � I � I k . • • C�I�Mi��ITY A��A��S ����lI���S�ON City of tynwood 11330 Bullis Road Lynwood, Ca 90262 REGULAR MEETING OF THE COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION NOVEMBER 18, 1988 The Community Affairs Commission met in a regular session on November Z8, 1987 at the Council Chambers of the City Hall, 11330 Bullis Road, Lynwood California. (Agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown Act). Commissioner Litsinger called the meeting to order at 5:15 p.m. Present Absent Excused Bette Espeseth Barbara Newton Ann Fields David Litsinger Marion Madden Lucille Walker Yoland Bays Staff present were Donald J. Fraser, Carol de Jesus and Rosemary Vaidovinos. It was moved, seconded and carried to approve the minutes of August 19 and September 8, 1987. i . . BUSINESS ITEMS I A. REVIEW OF THE CONSTITUTION SHOW I Chairperson Litsinger congratulated the members of the commission � and city staff for having done a great job organizing the i dinner/play "It Happened in Phiiadelpkia." He reported that he had not heard of any negative comments regarding the event. He � further praised the players for their outstanding performance. I This was the first time the players performed in a community type of set-up. 1 i I ( ' � � Commissioner Walker made mention of the very nice dinner and the well-presented play. Commissioner Espeseth compared the Block Watch Captains Dinner (held towards the end of October) to the dinner/play. She stated that the Block Watch Captains Dinner was full of long speeches , and people were bored unlike the entertaining play and nice dinner sponsored by the Commission. Ms. Valdovinos qave a financial status report on the dinner/play. The successful affair had 134 people in attendance; expenses totaled to $1,563.33 (flowers, dinner, and decorations) and collected amount from tickets was $1,105. The City put up $458.33 which was less than the original budgeted amount of $650 , for this event. NEW PROJECTS Commissioner Bays had been working with the Lynwood Welfare Bureau on a Christmas Program wherein they asked the Lynwood community for toys or canned goods to be distributed. to needy children for Christmas. She is in need of volunteers who can help her sort out the gifts, and make baskets for any family in need. Mr: Fraser suggested that the City Hall can be a centralized location where people can put the toys in the box provided for such. Ad ad will be sent out to different newspapers to publicize this program after Commissioner Bays has given more details. The members of the commission expressed willingness to help out in this project. They will take charge of picking up the stuff from City Hall and bring it to the Fire Station where the formal distribution of gifts will take place. , Another project that Mr. Fraser brought up to the members of the I Commission was the setting up of Bateman Hall for the Commissioners Dinner to be held on December 10, 1987. Members I � agreed to do the set-up and Christmas decorations. i The next reqular meeting is scheduled for December 16. The i meeting ended at 6 P.M• I I . � a ' • • C�N�Mt��I�Y A���,I�� ���i����SION : City of Lynwood . 11330 Bullis Road Lynwood, Ca 90262 REGULAR MEETING OF THE COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION DECEMBER 16, 1987 The Community Affairs Commission met in a regular session on December 16, 1987 at the Council Chambers of the City Hall, 11330 Bullis Road, Lynwood California. (Agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown Act). Commissioner Litsinger called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. Present Absent Excused Bette Espeseth Yolanda Bays Ann Fields David Litsinger Barbara Newton Lucille Walker Marion Madden Staff present: Don Fraser, Carol de Jesus and Rosemary Valdovinos. � BUSINESS ITEMS � A. Collection of Historical Artifacts/Information Mr. Fraser explained to the members of the Commission that Hintz and Balvin are now taping the video on the History of Lynwood. As soon as the City has received the finished product, formal presentation of the video will take place. Mr. Fraser solicited the help of the Commission to join forces with the Community Rccess Board in setting up a display of � historical artifacts at the lobby of City Hall and to help in i any way to promote the videotape. i Chairperson Litsinger said it would be nice to include the first three masonic lodge masters in the tape. I i i � � I � ' � B. Discussion of New Projects Commissioner Espeseth suggested that the Commission should come up with another flower (instead of" zinnias") as the City's flower and have a special celebration similar to the Azalea Festival of the City of South Gate. There was no motion to formally vote on this measure. Commissioner Newton came up with the idea of having a Teacher of the Year" Award. However, the Commission was apprehensive of the idea because this will create some complications with the school district. COMMISSION ORALS Commissioner Madden inquired why trolley names were not printed on the Lynwood Trolleys. She recalled the Commission had spent a great deal of time working on the "Name a Trolley Contest." Mr. Fraser apologized for inadvertently overlooked this situation and will take up this matter with his staff. Commissioner Espeseth attended the groundbreaking for the bus depot and was pleased with the preparation. There was a light lunch, a drill team and band from the High School. Commissioner Newton announced the appointment of a new principal to Will Rogers School, Cheryl White. Chairperson Litsinger proudly announced that the Community Affairs Commission had a 100� attendance to the Commissioners Dinner. He made a motion to write a formal thank you note.to the . City Council for their hospitality. Motion was carried unanimously. (see attached thank you note) Mr. Litsinger has received a letter from the Association for Retarded Citizens explaining the role of Lynwood Value Village, a thrift store. The president asked Mr. Litsinger to relate the contents of' the letter to the members of the commission. The latter suggested it would be a good idea to invite someone from the association to speak to the group next meeting. The following commissioners were reappointed by the City Council to the Commission at its December 1, 1987 Council meeting: i Ann Fields David Litsinger Lucille Walker Chairperson Litsinger reminded the staff to post the election for i Commission's chairperson and vice-chairperson on the next agenda. i The next Commission regular meeting is scheduled for January 20, � 1988.
