The Invocation was given by Commissioner Eloise Evans and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Robert Markovic. Roll Call of Commissioners Present: Commissioner Eloise Evans ' Commissioner Robert Markovic Commissioner Julio Mendoza Chairperson George Martini Excused Commissioner Bette Espeseth SCHEDULED MATTERS Ralph Davis certified the Agenda posting by the City Clerk. A motion was made by Commissioner Robert Markovic approving the minutes for the regular meeting of July 26, 1988 with a second by Commissioner Evans and all in agreement. RECOGNITION OF TINY BASEBALL TEAM FOR L.A. COUNTY TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS VICTORY: A plaque was presented to Mark Williams, the Coach of the Lynwood Tiny Baseball All Stars: For outstanding achievement in L.A. County Coca Cola Classic the City of Lynwood Recreation & Parks Department proudly presents this award. The names of the youngsters on the team were read so they could be commended and pictures taken with the Commission, for those that were present. H. Lopez, B. Cochran, A. Martinez, W. Yates, C. Oliver, P. Gomez, J. Lopez, A. Rheem, M. Charles, S. Garcia, J. Zepeda, C. Anderson and Roberto Enriquez, - who was chosen as Most Valuable Player at the Tournament for the Tiny Division. Personnel.......none � (continued) Page Two • � CURRENT PROGRAM REPORT by Jim Given The last session of Day Camp has approximately 70 participants, while the first two sessions had approximately 150 each. A Special Activity has been coordinated by Commissioner Eloise Evans for an Anti Drug and Gang - Say No to Drugs Program scheduled for this Friday at Ham Park from 10 a.m. to 1�:30 p.m.. Also partici- � pating will be the Sheriff's Department and County Health Officials. In the future each of the three (3) sessions of Day Camp will have the program offered. Girls Softball Banquet was held last Wednesday with approximately 300-400 participants. � This Saturday there will be a Decathalon at the Lynwood High School from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at a cost of $1.00 per participant. There will be a variety of events. This Saturday there will be a Town Hall Meeting at Bateman Hall from 2- 4:30 p.m.. Senator Cranston is expected to attend. Lynwood won the National Award for the 78-79 Division, 4 by 100 Meter Relay at the Hershey Track & Field Meet in Hershey, Pa.. The youngsters representing Lynwood were: Roland Bess, Alex Ramirez, Michael Ranson and Jason Flowers. The Fall Program is being prepared which will start early in October. Next month a proposal is being submitted to the School Board requesting an After School Program at eight (8) public schools. Commissioner Evans asked�who sponsored the youngsters. that participated in the Track Meet at Hershey, Pa.? Jim Given advised,the Hershey Chocolate Company. ACTIVITIES REPORT by Ralph Davis Ralph Davis distributed the July Activities Report to the Commission. Commissioner Evans expressed she was pleased with the report and made a motion that the Suly Activities Report be accepted. Commissioner Mendoza made a second with all in agreement. ANTI GRAFFITI PROGRAM AND REPORT by Ralph Davis Ralph Davis distributed the July Graffiti Report to the Commission which indicated the following completed jobs: 60 residences - 5,542 square footage, 16 Business/ Commercial - 10,115 square footage, 11 Public Facilities - 10,361 square footage. The department is researching the operation of control of alley clean up. Contact has been made with the Sheriff's Department and Sergeant Graves will be helping to curtail future problems in the neighborhood with ideas on the control of graffiti. Formal bid procedures are being prepared by Public Works for the purchase of a one (1) ton pick up and a one (1) ton step van. (continued) i - - Page Three • . DEPARTMENT REORGANIZATION PROPOSAL DISCUSSION & REPORT ON PROPOSED DEPARTMENT REORGANIZATION by Ralph Davis Ralph Davis advised he wished to update the Commission on the reorganization which is being studied under the Classification Guidelines. Items under consideration are changing the title of the department and title changes for a few supervisors. The title of Recreation & Parks to be changed to Leisure and Community Services. Ralph Davis has had a title change from Recreation Superintendent to Assistant Director of Recreation & Parks and in the near future there will be two other positions that will be re-titled. Recreation Supervisor will be Recreation Superintendent and Parks Supervisor will be Parks Superintendent. These changes are due to the responsibilities and duties having expanded so greatly. The department is now operating such programs as; Dial-A-Ride, Hot Meals, Hypertension Testin, Beautification, Flu Shots, Rabies Shots, Legal Aid, Food Distribution, Polling Site, Anti Graffiti, Senior Citizens and the Newsletter. A short discussion followed regarding the changes and upgrading for Recreation and Parks. PUBLIC ORAL COMMUNICATION None COMMISSION ORAL AND WRITTEN COPAIUNICATIONS Commissioner Robert Markovic...mentioned the improvements on Long Beach Blvd. look nice. Commissioner Julio Mendoza...none Commissioner Eloise Evans...reminded everyone to try to attend the Say No to Drugs Program at Ham Park on Friday. Commissioner George Martini...mentioned an article he read in the paper that he thought might affect the department, which is the anticipated improvement of the south side of Imperial Highway, Long Beach Blvd. - Long Beach Freeway regarding island operation. He also advised there is a great deal of graffiti on the alley located between Lewis Road and Alexander. He also stated he had not seen anything published in the papers on the winners of the latest Beautification Awards. Ralph Davis ...informed the Commission that Aarold Mattoon is on vacation in Hawaii and upon his return Ralph would be taking vacation time.
