Met with USDA regarding summer meals program. 2. Interviews were held for summir employment positions. 3. In Service for summer employeis was conducted June 24. 4. Met with Chamber of Commerce regarding Car Show & Carnival. I 5. Held training session with Seiior Citizens on Food Pantry Program. I 6. A special bingo session for S�nior Citizens was held June 30. I 7. Swimming Programs and Day Camp began June 27. � 8. Baseball season was completedlin June. Presently All Star Teams j are practicing for area tourniments. , 9. T-Ball League will continue tirouqh July 16. I 10. Shrubs around Natatorium and iommunity Center were trimmed. ; 11. Backboard on Diamond #2 Was r � 12. Basketball rims were replace� on reservoir game courts. I i 13. 1 1/2" vacuum breaker was relaired at City Hall. i 14. Repaired 2" valve and five sprinklers at Ham Park. i 15. Repaired sprinkler on Flowerl State, Long Beach Blvd., and Los � Flores medians. � 16. Replaced boards on bleachers on Diamond #1 and #2. j 17. Vertical blinds were installid in office at Bateman Hall. '; 18. Girls Softball League is in full swing. Games played on Tuesday, I Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday in City Park. � 19. All City Drill Team Banquet was held June 17 at Bateman Hall. , 20. CITY OF LYNWOOD LYNWOOD RECREATION fi PARRS DEPARTMENT I RECREATION 6 PARKS DEPARTMENT COPQSISSION MINUTES FOR ,7UNE 28, 1988 The meeting was called to order by Ch lirperson Bette Espeseth at 7:35 p.m.. The Invocation was given by Co�issioler George Martini and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Julio Mendoza. Roll Call of Commissioners Present: Co�issioner Robert Markovic Co�issioner George Martini Commissioner Julio Mendoza Chairperson Bette Espeseth Excused Co�issioner Eloise Evans SCHEDULID MATTERS Jim Given certified the Agenda Posting by the City Clerk. A motion was made by Co�issioner Geolge Martini approving the minutes for the � regular meeting of May 24, 1988 with a second by Commissioner Julio Mendoza and ' all in agreement. I BEAUTIFICATION AWARDS 5 PRESENTATION: i I Chairperson Bette Espeseth welcomed all the recipients present for the Beautification I Awards. She requested the assistancelof the other Commissioners to present the Certificate Awards to the following risidents of Lynwood: Mr. Coleman , Mr. Gates I Mr. Zalada I Ms. Dorothy Parker � I The following were not present to acclpt their Certificate Award: ', Mr. Singleton � Mr. Younger I Mr. Mc Peake I The three (3) best homes selected out of the 10 were awarded with Certificates � and Plaques, which were: � Mrs. E. Allen (accepting on behalf of her deceased husband) i Mrs. Joseph J�ackson (accepting on behalf of her husband) � and not present was Ann Fields � I Pictures were taken as recipients acciepted their awards and words of congratulations I were made by all the Co�issioners. I � I � I I �}` _. � � Page Two PUBLIC ORAL COMMiJNICATION TO ANY ITEM ON AGENDA None CORRESPONDENCE: Jim Given read a letter to the Co�nission from Lynwood NAACP ACT-SO requesting the use of Bateman Hall with waiver of fees for June 29, 1988 for a reception to honor students who will represent the City of Lynwood at the 1988 competition in Washington, D.C.. The reception wfiich is open to the pablic, will have presentations made to the students bylAdvisory Council Board Chairperson, The Honorable Paul Richards, II, as well as representatives from the offices of Maxine Waters and Pau1 Zeltner. Co�issioner Robert Markovic made a motion to grant the request for use and waiver of fees for Bateman Hall for t�is program, a second by Commissioner George Martini and all in agreement. Jim Given advised there was a letter addressed to the Commission requesting waiver of fees for Bateman Hall by the Lynwood Singles Club. The Commissioners expressed their,pleasure for the department's decision to handle the program as an in-house program to alleviate tfie buiden of the rental charge for.the Lynwood 5ingles Club. MONTHLY STAFF REPORTS A. Facility Usage...Bateman Hall, Community Center & Ham Park attached to agenda B. News Releases...mailed on a current basis C. Personnel...Jim Given reported that Phillip Cobb has been hired as,the full time Laborer in the Graffiti Program. Mrs. Allen inquired how to handle an lye sore that needed graffiti removed which is located on the corner of Virginia and Atlantic. Jim Given explained the department would send someone by to get a right of entry form signed so it can be painted. CURRENT PROGRAM REPORT: by Ta'aiasa Mamea, Jr. The Girls Softball Program has just started with 5 Midget teams and 5 Tiny teams . with first games to be held Thursday.l There is open registration for Drill Team for ages 5-IS years at a cost of $10.00 each. Registration will be open until July 22. Recently there was an awards banquet hedl for the participants of last year's Drill Team. The boys have concluded their Baseball Season on Saturday. T-Ball is still going . and will conclude on July 16th with albanquet to be held on July 20. An invitation letter will be sent to the Commissioners inviting them to the banquet. There will also ba a swim session scheduled for the youngsters prior to the banquet, to be held at the Natatorium. 300 youngsteis participated in this year's program. Currently there are a couple of.tournl ents of baseball that the youngsters are to be involved in. L.A. County from 7(23-8/23/88. Pico Boys Tournament 7/15-7/23/88. On July 4th there will be All Star games played with the.City of Carson vs Lynwood on Diamond lll with all divisions participating before the Fire Works Spectacular. This Friday the Department is treating the volunteer coaches to a night at the Dodgers vs Chicago game as a thank you from the Department. . . , � �' Page Three � � The Senior Program will be having Blood Pressure Check on 6/29/88 at the Community Center from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.. There is a Bingo Tournament on 6/30/88 at Bateman Hall in Room ll2 from 12:30-3:00 p.m.. A trip is scheduled for"The Price Is Right" on 7/5/88 from 2:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m.. On 7/17 there is a trip scheduled for Medieval Times in Buena Park froml11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at a cost of $28.00 which covers Dinner, Show & Transportation. The deadline to sign up is July 5. On 8/12 there will be a Cholesterol Blood Level Check from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. at $15.00 per person. Call for an appoiritment. Jim Given expressed his appreciation lo Jr. for a job well done for this Baseball Season. He also commented that the Day Camp Session I has started with approximately 130 participants, the Pool is open for classes and recreational swim. Due to the Newsletter getting out to the Lynwood residents late, the department has postponed classes starting for 2 weeks in order to have more registration. Classes will start Suly 11 and not Sune 27. CURRENT PROJECT REPORT: by Jim Given The current Monthly Report on Activiti of the Recreation Department was distributed to the Coffiission. Jim Given advised��Prop 70 did pass and approximately $150,000 - i �190,000 in funds would be coming to Lynwood for park renovation. ANTI GRAFFITI PROGRAM & REPORT: bylJim Given Copies of the report were distributed.l Jim Given informed the Commission that properties cleared of graffiti in the month of June included: 61 residences with 13,111 square feet, 6 public facilitie�s with 1,300 square feet and the commercial properties have not been started yet. PUBLIC O RAL COMM[7NICATION Non.e COMMISSION ORAL 6 WRITTEN COMMiJNICATION Co�issioner Robert Markovic...commentid that the resurfaced portion of Wright Road north of the freeway wasn't to.have tricks traveling on it, but does. Commissioner George Martini...thanked the citizens of Lynwood for their participation in the Beautification Program and comminted he felt it stemmed from the Block Watch Program started 20 years ago. Co�issioner Julio Mendoza...Congratulated and thanked the Beautification recipients and expressed that there is a need to instill pride in more people to make Lynwood a more beautiful place to live. Co�issioner Bette Espeseth...commented Lynwood has clean air and has not had any smog alerts for 2 years.
