SUBJECT: ACTIVITY REPORT
DATE: February 18, 1988'
1. All park benches includinq benches in City Park, Ham Park and
Natatorium were painted.
2. Restoration of soccer fields after Circus Vargas activity began. 30
yards of soil was applied to fill depressions and level field.
3. Two new trees were planted in wading pool area.
4. All ball diamonds received new diamond mixture and were leveled in
preparation for upcoming baseball season.
5. Steel pipe barriers were installed on East median near Hosler Jr.
High School. These barriers were needed to prevent trash and delivery
trucks from driving across median.
6. ,New picnic tables were installed on pads at Ham Park.
7. All medians on Long Beach Blvd. graded in preparation for seeding.
8. All irrigation valves were changed and new sprinklers installed on
Long Beach Blvd. medians north of Imperial.
9. The Lynwood Sports Association held its 5th Annual Golf Tournament
at Los Amigos Golf Course on February 15th. A total of 64 golfers
partiaipated. Donations were received from Lynwood Firefighters
Association, McDonalds Restaurant and First State Bank. The Tournament
raised $417.00 for the Association.
10. The "Shape Up" anti-graffiti program is set to begin full operation
on February 22• Administrative offices for the program will be located
in the Communitg Center. Field operations are currently at City garage.
After renovations the operation will move to the old Burn's Cleaner
Building on Fernwood and Court Street.
11. The boys basketball program began on February 6 with a total of 16
teams. 4 teams in 5-7 age group, 4 teams in 5-10 age group, 6 teams in
the 11-12 age group and 2 teams in the 13-15 age group.
12. A 8-10 year division team will be playing in the Culver City
Tournament on July 27th.
13. An excursion to Big Bear for fun in the snow will be held February
2 0. '
14. Classes in piano and self defense are continuing.
�-' 15. The tutoring ses• ons have 15 students in t� Wednesday session and
10 students in the Saturday morning session.
16. The Black History Program is scheduled for the weekend of February
19, 20 and 21. The activities will include a Variety Show on Friday,
February 19, a Cultural Fair and Battle of the Bands, Saturday, February
20 and a Gospel Music Festival on Sunday, February 21.
17. School visitation to promote and distribute information on girls
basketball league were held during the week of February 15.
18. The All City"Drill Team participated in Los Angeles Chinese New Year
Parade on Saturday, February 13.
1g. Two girls basketball teams participated in the City of Cerritos
Valentines Day Tournament. The Jr. Division team emerged as Champions
in ther tournament.
20. Information on the Women's Basketball to be held in April was
distributed durinq the week of February 15.
21. John Ham Lighting project is nearing completion. Final walk-through
is scheduled for Eebruary 23. Completion date for project is February
29.
22. Installation of new filters at Natatorium is anticipated to be
completed by February 22• Tests will be held during that week. This
installation was done entirely by city staff.

RECREATION & PARKS DEPARTMENT COMMISSION MINUTES FOR JANUARY 26, 1988
The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Bette Espeseth at 7:30
p.m.
The Invocation was given by Commissioner George Martini and the Pledge
of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Robert Markovic.

Harold Mattoon certified the Agenda Posting by the City Clerk.
A motion was made and seconded approving the minutes of the regular
meeting of November 24, 1987 as mailed by a motion by Commissioner
Robert Markovic and a second by Commissioner Eloise Evans with all in
agreement. ,

CURRENT PROGRAM REPORT by Ralph Davis
Copies of the 1988 Spring Program were passed out to the Commissioners.
December activities included a field trip during vacation time and the
Banquet for Flag Football.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Basketball Tournament was held the weekend of-
January 15th. It was a successful tournament with over 20 teams
competing. The Lynwood Drill Team participated in the Compton Parade
and placed first. They are preparing for two more parades in February
and March.

UPCOMING EVENTS... Circus Vargas will be at City Park on February lst
and 2nd. Black History will have Tribute to Black Entertainment on
February 19th at Bateman Hall and free to the public. On February 20th
Battle of the Bands and a Cultural Fair will be held in the Park.
February 21st there will be a Gospel Concert in the afternoon. The
Department will sponsor a Snow Trip to Big Bear on February 20th.
Special Interest Classes being offered are: Self Defense, Aerobic Dance
Exercise, Ballet Modern, Ballet Folklorico, Tap, Flower Arrangement,
Piano, Tumbling and Tennis.
Boys Developmental Baseball is being offered to give youngsters an
opportunity to get instruction on the game. Lynwood Track Team is .
taking registration. Girls and Boys Youth Basketball will begin the
first of February.
Commissioner Evans inquired about the Seniors Therapeutic Program and
registration for participation in the Black History Program.
ANTI GRAFFITI PROGRAM: by Ralph Davis
On January 25th approval was received from City Council to start the
Graffiti Program with an additional full time and part time Laborer. At
this point there will be 3 full time, 1 part time Laborer and 1 fu11.
time Clerk-Typist. The proqram will be starting in February with the
hiring of staff, getting equipment bids and equipment supplies.
The Young People of Lynwood will handle the graffiti until we are ready
and then their efforts will be concentrated on alley clean up.
Commissioner Martini commented he would like to see the public made
aware of the progress in this program through newspaper releases.
There was a short discussion on several different aspects of the
program.
JOHN D. HAM LIGHTING PROJECT REPORT: by Harold Mattoon
The project was slowed down a little by inclement weather. The footings
are all in for the poles. The conduit and wire will be installed this
week. The poles are to be delivered this week or next week. Everything
is on schedule and should be finished by the due date of February 29.
CURRENT PROJECT REPORT: by Aarold Mattoon
Harold Mattoon passed out copies of the Parks & Recreation Activity
Report for January which covers special programs and projects being
handled by the Department. He explained this report was for their
review to give them an idea of what is current or completed.

Commissioner Julio Mendoza...none.
Commissioner George Martini...advised the Natatorium lights on the
south side have been on 24 hours a day for some time and also the field
light by the childrens play area. He inquired if it would be possible
to clip or remove the tree at the east end of the patio of the
Natatorium. He commented the City Park curbing around City Park needs
repairs as blocks are broken. Mr. Mattoon advised the Rehab Improvement
Project will correct some of these items.

Commissioner Bette Espeseth...asked if there is a Recreation Conference
coming up soon. Mr. Mattoon advised there is a C.P.R.S. conference in
Long Beach scheduled for the week end of 2/26,2/27 & 2/28 and offered to
mail the pertinent information to the Commissioners if they wished to
attend.
Commissioner Espeseth also inquired about a new road behind the Park and
commented on the hospital parking situation since construction began on
the hospital. She asked that all that could, please attend the upcoming
Black History Program.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m. until Tuesday, February 23, 1988
in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 11330 Bullis Road, Lynwood at 7:30
p.m..
