SUBJECT: ACTIVITIES REPORT
DATE: . January 8, 1988
1. John D. Hatri Field Lighting Project has been delayed somewhat due to
' inclement weather. However, the project should be completed within the
completion date of February 29, 1988.
2, Boys Basketball Camp has been completed. Highlights of the camp
included an excursion to Pauley Pavilion for a tribute to Dr. J. and a
trip to L.A. Sports Arena to view a game between U.S.C. and Tennessee.
' 3. Classes in Self Defense, Piano and Tutoring have completed their
first sessions. Registration is now being taken for next session.
4. A holiday shopping trip to Tijuana was held on Saturday, December
14. Very successful.
5. Registration currently being taken for Youth Basketball Program.
6. A special Senior Citizen Bingo Day is scheduled for January 28.
. 7. A trip to Los Angeles Childrens Museum is scheduled for January 27.
This trip is being coordinated with the School District's Special
� Education students.
S. Preparations for upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. Basketball
Tournament are complete. The Tournament will be held January 15, 16 &
. 17.
9. The Irrigation System in the new City Hall planters was restored and
repaired where new curbing was installed.
10. All play equipment at City.Park and Ham Park was checked and
repaired as needed. Swings and Flying Pony "S" hooks replaced, new
seats and chairs added where necessary.
11. A 4" water 1ine�was repaired in City Park.
12. All portable picnic tables were painted.
13. Trees along Hosler fences were trimmed (15 Jacaranda, 5 Oak)
14. Six new picnic tables were assembled, painted and placed in City
Park.
15. Renovation work was begun on Long Beach Boulevard medians between
Imperial Highway and Century Boulevard. The irrigation system will be
redesigned, new valves, replacing controllers. New grass and shrubbery
wiil be planted when all other work is completed. �
.,16�L`� The old filters� the Natatorium have bee�emoved in preparation
for installation of new filters.
17. Plans and specifications for the cogenertation system have been
received. Presently being reviewed by staff.

' The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Chairperson Bette
Espeseth.'

Harold Mattoon certified Posting of the Agenda by the City Clerk.
The minutes of the regular meeting of October 27, 1987 were approved as
mailed by a motion by Commissioner Robert Markovic and a second by
Commissioner Eloise Evans with all in agreement.

CURRENT PROGRAM REPORT: by Jim Given. f .
The Halloween Carnival was held on Saturday, October 31st with a good
turnout. Next 'year there will be a new category added for judginq,
which wi11 be the family category. The Cheese Distribution wi11 be
� Wednesday. Last Saturday the �4 Womens Basketball Team in the country,
Long Beach State, gave a demonstration at the Workshop for the Girls
Basketball Camp. The Christmas Boutique was held over the weekend.
Flag Football is underway. Boys Basketball Camp is underway. Track is
going' well with o'0 participants. . Their uniforms are being supplied
through the.Amateur Athletic Foundation. The Track Team will be marchina
in the Christmas Parade. The Drill Team wi11 also be marching in the
Christmas Parade for their first performance. The o0 girls sold cookies
or paid, up to $100.00 per outfit. The Natatorium is closed and the
filters are being dismantled. Approximat�ly December 19th the new
filfers will be put in. On November 30th tY�e ba11 diamond lights at Ham

Park will be install� The Cnristmas Parade • an upcoming event and
tne contract classes are little past mid way point at this time.
Commissioner Evans suggested the recreation programs could be promoted
through local church bulletin publication.
CHRISTMAS PARADE REPORT: by Harold Mattoon
Mr. Mattoon invited all the Commissioners to attend the pre-parade
reCeption at Bateman Hall. The Grand Marshall wzll be Ms. Marla Gibbs
of the T.V. program "227". Ken Howe11 of the Dodgers will also
participate.

ANTI GRAFFITI PROGRAM REPORTc ,by Harold Mattoon .
Mr. Mattoon passed out copies of the proposal presented to Council
describing how Parks and Recreation would administer the anti-graffiti
program. Staff has spent considerable time studying the problem and
investigating other communities that have an anti-graffiti program.
Council has requested estimates from outside contractors.
Commissioner Martini recommended the program be handled on an in-house
basis.
SURPLUS FOOD DISTRIBUTION: by Harold Mattoon
The Cheese Distribution being held November 25th will give a 5 pound
block of cheese and a 2 1/2 pound bag of rice to the citizens of Lynwood
at the Community Center.
PUBLIC ORAL COMMUNICATION: None
COMMISSION ORAL & WRITTEN COMMUNICATION:
Commissioner Martini emphasized the need to make the community aware of
what's happening on the graffiti program.
Commissioner Mendoza wished all the Commissioners a Happy Thanksgiving.
Commissioner Markovic extended the same and added a Merry.Christmas.
Commissioner Fspeseth wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. She
inquired as to how long the street behind the natatorium would be under
construction. The Salvation Army wi11 be having a brown bag day on
Wednesday and on Thanksgiving Day a free turkey dinner is planned for
anyone in need.
Harold Mattoon wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and Pleasant Holiday
and advised that qeneraliy the Commission does not meet in December as
it falls in Christmas week, so unless the Commission wished to
charge...tonight's meetir.g would be adjourned to January 26,'1988.

BOYS DEVELOPMENTAL BA5EBALL CAMP: FEE: $10.00
This camp will teach basic fundamentals on baseball to those young
boys who would like to improve or learn more about baseball.
Registration starts February 1- April 9, 1988. Ages 5- 15 years old.
Camp dates:Saturdays from March 5- April 9 1-3pm on Diamond #1
TRACK PROGRAM -'LYNWOOD LIGHTNING TRACK CLUB
The Track Program is coached by Hardie Massingill and Marlue Cole.
Workouts are held after school at Lynwood High School from 4:30 - 6:00
p.m. (good weather permitting) Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays (time to
be announced), and meets are scheduled for various days and times. This
program is open to both Girls and Boys - Ages 8 to 15. Monthly dues
' wi11 be required to help defray cost of coaches and other
(administrative) items. Monthly Dues are as follows: $5.00 (1) person,
g7.pp (21 persons, �10.00 (3) or more living in the same household.
