October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women. Getting mammograms regularly can lower the risk of dying from breast cancer. The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends that if you are 50 to 74 years old, be sure to have a screening mammogram every two years. If you are 40 to 49 years old, talk to your doctor about when to start and how often to get a screening mammogram. There are different symptoms of breast cancer, and some people have no symptoms at all. Symptoms can include: ● Any change in the size or the shape of the breast. ● Pain in any area of the breast. ● Nipple discharge other than breast milk (including blood). ● A new lump in the breast or underarm. If you have any signs that worry you, see your doctor right away. Some main factors that influence your risk for breast cancer include: ● Being a woman. ● Being older (most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older). ● Having changes in your breast cancer genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2). Most women who get breast cancer have no known risk factors and no history of the disease in their families. There are things you can do to can help lower your breast cancer risk. Although breast cancer screening cannot prevent breast cancer, it can help find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat. Talk to your doctor about which breast cancer screening tests are right for you, and when you should have them. ● Each year in the United States, more than 240,000 women get breast cancer and more than 40,000 women die from the disease. ● Men also get breast cancer, but it is not very common. Less than 1% of breast cancers occur in men. ● Most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older, but breast cancer also affects younger women. About 10% of all new cases of breast cancer in the United States are found in women younger than 45 years of age. Sightings from the Poop Deck “Do what you feel in your heart to be right……...for you’ll be criticized anyway.” Eleanor Roosevelt Farmers Markets are in abundance here on Cape Cod this season, from Bass River to West Tisbury. Here in Brewster you can see what our locals are growing every Sunday from 9:30am to 12:30pm at Windmill Village, sponsored by The Brewster Historical Society. Check it out. Yesterday we drove down to the Cape Cod Beer Farmers Market on Phinney’s Lane, Hyannis. It’s been many years since we first took the tour and the changes have been dramatic. If you don’t see what you came looking for at the market, you can always go inside their beer-making facility and pick up a 64-ounce growler to take home, filled with your favorite type of Cape Cod beer. I’m partial to the Beach Blonde Ale. Large tents are set up just outside the brewery should you choose to sample the different varieties. You may have problems finding an empty seat. Should you plan on tasting every type, bring a designated driver along. Leashed dogs are everywhere and always welcome, including inside the brewery, although I must admit, I did not see any doing any sampling. Guess they weren’t 21! BTW, in the event you are wondering where the connection between farmers markets, beer tasting and Eleanor Roosevelt might be, well there is no connection at all. I just happen to like the quote, which I find to be quite true. One of my summer reads this year was Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book, “No Ordinary Time” in which one of the main characters happen to be Ms. Roosevelt, and while she served as first lady just a tad before I could understand her impact, I came away very favorably with how she was portrayed by the author. If you’re looking for a good book to while away your leisure time you may want to consider this one. Peter R.
