MEETING MINUTES for MAY 25, 2004
' 1) Call to Order: Chairperson Flores called the May 2004 Recreation 8i Parks
Commission meeting to order at 5:02 p.m.
2/3) Invocation 8i Pled�e: Commissioner Reed gave the Invocation and Commissioner
Espeseth led the Pledge of Allegiance.
4) Roll Call: Chairperson Flores —Present

5) . Agenda Postin�: The Agenda was duly posted for the May 25, 2004 meeting.
6) Approval of Past Minutes: Chairperson Flores motions for review and approval of
the minutes for the Recreation 8i Parks Commission meeting held in April 2004.
Commissioner Espeseth motions that the minutes be approved and Commissioner
.. Mendoza seconds the motion. All Commissioners vote in favor of approving the
minutes with one *correction and the motion is carried.
*Correction — Vice Chairperson Wood stated that it was Mr. Furillo and not
himself that is in contact with two batting cage companies. See: IX. Staff Repores —
D. Spores Ambassador Report (April 2004 minutes).

A. Faciliry Usage Report — Attached for review
The Lynwood City Council has requested that a report be prepared by the
Recreation Department on facility fee waivers and that the report be
agendized. The Council will then make a decision on facility fee waivers
based on this report.
B. Division/Monthly Reports — Provided by Depury Director Deborah ]ackson

I . . The Senior Advisory Board is selling ads for their souvenir booklet for
the Ms. Senior Lynwood Pageant. Space for tributes may also be
purchased.
� . The Natatorium will host its annual Memorial Day Swim on 5/31.

10) Scheduled Macters:
A. Neighborhood Beautification Program — Ms. Jackson hands out a timeline for
the program induding the adyertising flier, judging criteria, letters to
participants and award "sample" sign. After a tirief review, the Commissioners
voted on accepting the timeline. Chairperson Flores called for the question,
Commissioner Espeseth motioned that the timeline be approved, Commissioner
Reed seconded the motion and the motion was carried. Ms. ]ackson inquired as
to whether the Commission would like to present the winner(s) with their
award(s) at a Council meeting or at a Recreation meeting. They also discussed
what type of sign should be awarded to the winner. Ms. )ackson and Mr. Trejo
will bring back ideas of window and yard signs at a future meeting.
Ms. Jackson invited Chairperson Flores to attend a]une Council meeting to say
a few words on the Neighborhood Beautification Program on behalf of the
Recreation and Parks Commission.
1 1) Commission Orals: (Please abide by the 3-minute time limit for each Commissioner)
. Commissioner Espeseth — Is concerned about the low attendance at the
Coordinating Council and Chamber of Commerce meetings each month. Each
only had about a dozen people in attendance; there used to be approximately
30 to 40 people that attended regularly. Commissioner Espeseth would also
like to tour the new parks in a City van once they are completed. �
. Commissioner Mendoza — No comment
. Vice Chairperson Wood — Girl's Softball Closing Ceremony will be held in
Lynwood City Park on 6/19. T-ball concluded with a single elimination in-
house tournament. Vice Chairperson Wood was the umpire. The Recreation
Department will be hosting three tournamenu on ]uly 8, 2004.
. Commissioner Reed — Inquires about activities for the annual Juneteenth
Celebration. Commissioner Reed commented that Perry Brents, Deputy Director
� should not try to handle every aspect of this event. Commissioner Reed also
said that Community Affairs Commissioner Albert Lopez asked the other
Communiry Affairs Commissioners to volunteer at the International Day of the
Child event. She inquired about the function of the Communiry Affairs
. Commission in the community. She also remarked that Veterans Affairs
Commissioner.Albert Jimenez attends all Commission meetings.
I • Chairperson Flores - Inquired about the lighting salvaged from Ham Park. Vice
Chairperson Wood�commented that the Engineering Department said that it was
not economically feasible to reuse the lights. Ms. )ackson stated that lighu are
� on the wish list for capital improvement projecu. Chairperson Flores also
I remarked that AYSO needs the Recreation Department's help with an
upcoming Youth Soccer Clinic. He stated that Mark Flores, Administrative
'� Analyst II, would research sports grants. Chairperson Flores stated that he
i hopes the Ciry of Lynwood will put on a good show for participating cities at
, the upcoming SEMAA event. With the growing problem of obesiry in America
'I the Recreation Department needs to be more involved with children's health
i issues. Ms. ]ackson asks the Commissioners if they would be willing to host such
a program. They answered yes. Chairperson Flores announced that the City of
! Lynwood participated in a fundraising program for the Montebello Summer
i Youth Employment Program.
! • Commissioner Hernandez — Absent
� • Commissioner ]acinto — Apologizes for not attending the April meeting.
Inquires about activities for the annual Fourth of )ulyCelebration. He recently
i traveled to Washington D.C. and shared his experience and photos of the WWII
I Memorial.
