JULY 26, 2004
I. CALL TO ORDER: Chairperson John Beimer called the Veterans Affairs Council �
meeting to order at 5:07 p.m. �
II. INVOCATION: Board Member Charles Wood gave the Invocation.
III. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Board Member Ford led the Pledge of Allegiance.

V. AGENDA POSTING: Chairperson Beimer confirmed that the agenda was posted by the
City Clerk far the July 2004 meeting.
VI. APPROVAL OF MINiJTES: Chairperson Beimer requests a vote on the minutes for the
June meeting. Board Member Wood motions [hat the minutes be approved. Board
Member Mendoza seconds the motion. All members vote unanimously for approval of
the June minutes.
V1I. INFORMATION ITEMS: Ms. Andrea Hooper, City Clerk came by to report on the
condition of Board Member Hawn Reed. He is currently in the hospita] with a blood
infection in his leg. He is not doing very well at this time but is eager to retum home.
VIII. SCHEDULED MATTERS:
None scheduled but the following was discussed:
A. Memorial Monument - Mr. Rodriguez requested that the Board Members provide
recommendations for utilizing a 65-foot long wall that is part of the design for the
Veterans Memorial Monument. He is also open to suggestions and ideas for this
year's Veterans Day Ceremony to be held in November. Mr. Rodriguez stated that
the City of Riverside has a tree of life where leaves can be bought for the tree.
Chairperson Beimer suggests the sale of bricks with service personnel names on
them. Currently there is $200,000.00 available to fund the memorial project; other
grants have been solicited for additional monies need to complete this endeavor.
B. Fundraiser for Gerardo Garcia — There will be a dinner and silent auction starting at
4:00 p.m. at the Natatorium to raise funds for Gerardo Rivera, a Lynwood youth who
is sufFering from a rare form of cancer. Community volunteer Sylvia Ortiz has been
very instrumental in organizing this event to raise funds. Various items are being
auctioned by the Sheriff Department and Fire Department. Tickets are $15.00.
C. There was general discussion on the survivors of the Port Chicago ship explosion in
1942. Boazd Member Wood stated that this would be a good history lesson for youth.
D. Upcoming Sports & Events — Winter Baseball, Soccer, Ms. Senior Lynwood Pageant
on 8/23 at Bateman Hall. Programs ending — Summer Basketball.
IX. PUBLIC ORALS: A1taMed Adult Day Healthcare Centers - Brenda Trejo, a Health
Services Associate from A1taMed came by and gave an informative presentation
highlighting the services offered at the Golden Age Adult Day Healthcare Center located
at 3820 Martin Luther King h. Blvd. in Lynwood. There will be a grand opening of this
facility on Friday, August 2Q 2004 beginning with a press conference at 10:30 a.m. and a
reception and tour of the facility at 11:00 a.m. Local politicians will be present to speak
on this day including Congress Members Linda Sanchez and Marco Antonio Firebaugh
as well as L.A. County Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite-Burke and City of Lynwood
Mayor Louis Byrd. Some of the services offered are as follows: physical, occupational
and speech therapy, nursing care services, social worker counseling social and
therapeutic activities, breakfast and lunch, and transportation to and from center. They
also refer participants to other agencies if they are unable to provide assistance.
Interested persons may call Ms. Trejo for a tour of the facility; she recommends tours
during the time that participants are present so that you can see the program in progress.
X. BOARD MEMBER ORALS:
• Jones — Reported that 69-year old men aze being recruited to serve in Iraq. He
has an 83-year old friend that was called by the Navy to train new officers in
navigation.
• Wood — Commented that these soldiers get paid very well.
• Ford — Commented that he heard that soldiers must pay for many things on their
own.
• Fields - Absent
• Perez — Absent
• Mendoza — Commented that "once in service, always in service." He also stated
that there is lots of statuary in Plaza Mexico. His neighbors are complaining
about the noise level in their neighborhood due to the new restaurant in the area.
Parties are going on till all hours of the morning. Board Member Mendoza also
commented that he thought Lorry Hempe was doing a great job as City Manager.

• Beimer — RepoRed that he passed his driving test. He also mentioned that Joe
Wang is now the Interim City Manager.
