AUGUST 23, 2004
1. CALL TO ORDER: Chaiiperson John Beimer called the Veterans Affairs Council
meeting to order at 5:00 p.m.

V. AGENDA POSTING: Chairperson Beimer confiinned that the agenda was posted by the
City Clerk for thc August 2004 mecting.
V 1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Chairperson Beimcr requests a vote on the minutes for the
July meeting. All members vote unanimously for approval of the July minutes and the
motion is passed. �
Vll.: INFORMATION ITEMS:
A. - Veterans Memorial Monument - Mr. Leo Rodriguez shared dlat on August 3'�, the
evening of the National Nibht Out event here in Lynwood, a representative from
Congresswoman Linda Sanchez' ottice stopped by and discussed writing a grant
proposal and/or a letter of endorsement to help obtain funds for the Veterans
Memorial Monument. There will be a meeting with a E7ant writer on 8/26/04 to
review and discuss this project.
B. Skate Park Competition— Will be held on 8/28 at thc Lynwood Skate Park.
� Registration is fro�n 8:30 a.m. to 1 I:00 a.m. Thcre will be a BMX Course and a
Fladands Course.
V[II. SCI MATTERS:
A. Veterans Day Planning — Mr. Rodriguez discussed some of the elements of the
� annual Veterans Day event asking the Board Members if they wcre aware that
"Taps" has actual lyrics that go along with the musia Mr. Rodrigucz also
discussed the flag folding ceremony and accompanying verbiage read at the late
Board Member Albert Jimencz' funcral. Chairperson Beimcr inquired if any
changes have been made to thc design of the Memorial MonumenL Mr.
Rodriguez stated tliat no changes have becn made however suggestions are still
needed for the use of a blank wall opposite of the watcr elament. The City
Council is i� agreement on all of the design elements as they have been proposed.
It's possible that Coke or Pepsi may sponsor part of the project in exchange for
providing their products.
