CALL TO ORDER: Chairperson Beimer called the Veterans Affairs Council meeting to • order at 5:00 p.m. � �ll. INVOCATION: Board Member Wood gave the Invocation. 111. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Vice Chairperson Jones led the Pledge of Allegiance. AGENDA POSTING: Chairperson Beimer confinned that the agenda was posted by the City Clerk for the Novembcr 2003 meeting. � VI. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Chairperson Beiiner requests �t votc on thc minutes for the � October meeting. Board Member Jones motions that the minutes �be approved. Board - Member Wood seconds the motion. All �ne�nbers vote unanimously for approval of the October minutes. V[L 1NFORMATION ITEMS: Nonc Vllt. SCHEDULED MATTERS: A Veterans Day Program Review — Chairperson Beimer stated that two-weeks ]ater - � people are still talking about the program. Board Member Wood stated that Mr. Rodriguez and Mr. Knight did an excellentjob on the program. Mr. Rodriguez stated that he couldn't take all the credit for the success of the pro� as he had a � , lot of help from staff and volunteers. He did encounter some challenges with the small budget. All of the performers, band, choir, volunteers and staff did a great job in their respective roles as did Board Member Wood with the costumes; � although there were a�few challenges with uniform fittings. The young women from Compton College that portrayed the `Bevcrly Sisters" trio did an excellent job. One of the skits was rewritYen at the 1'ast minute, props were improvised and �� � some wereborrowed from St. Francis Medical Center. Mr. Rodriguez stated that he was very proud of his sons for their input and help with this project. One of � Mr. Rodriguez' sons shot a documentary video of the salute while in progress. The cast may be invited to participate in the Christmas parade. B. Ruthi Crockett— Veterans Affairs Medical Clinic Infiormation — Gave an extcnsive overview of the benefits and services offered at a new local V A co�mnunity-based outpatient clinic in Lynwood. Ms. Crockett also passed out an application for health benefits and gave general instructions on how to fill out the � application. answered many questions posed to her by the Board Members. Ms. Crockett stressed that its important that Veterans take advantage of every benefit , they are entitled to receive. C. Dallas Perkins — AARP — Tabled to a future meeting due to his child's illness. � IX. PUBUC ORALS: Mr. Raymond Hall from the LA County Arca Agency Council made a brief presentation on a program called the Senior Salutc. This "salute" honors senior �military veterans, both men and women, far their service to the Nation� and their coinmunities. Generally the pro��ram involves senior military personncl being thanked with a plaque and having their service record read by someone currently active in military service. Their na�nes are also placed over their beds (if they are in VA Hospitals) in � recognition of who they are and the services they have provided to their communities ;' through their active military duty and com�nunity service volunteer hours. X. BOARD MEMBER ORALS: Jones - Personally khanks Mr. Rodriguez for his exceptional work and also for the involvement ofMr. Rodriguez' sons. Wood - Stated that Mr. Rodriguez did an outstanding job. He also mentioned that an outdoor "mess halP' was arrangcd for all the youth participating in the program. � Mendoza - He watched the show four times and iY was great; he would have liked to see more people in the audience to watch the show. He stated that his wife also enjoyed the � � perfonnance very much. � Ford - Inquired as to whether anyone had seen a 60 Minutes news show about Dcsert Stonn POW's being tortured. These POW's are attempting to sue the Iraqi governme�t but have received no money yet � Reed - Thanked everyone for their role in the success of the Veterans Day Program, � � especially Mr. Rodriguez for dealing with many challenges. Gutierrez - No comment Fields - No comment � Jimenea - He promoted the salute to Bob Hope by informing all Cauncils, Commissions � � and Boards about the Veterans Affairs Counci] show. Board Member Jimenez asked Ms. ' Crockett about benefiYs for disabled homebound Vcterans that can't come to a clinic far medical care. Ms. Crockett staYed that the Veteran should call the Pee-based Division - and speak with a Case Manager. Arrangements would be madc for have a nurse visit that � Veteran at their home. Williams -Absent Beimer - He stated that he is still neceiving nice coinments about the `Beverly Sisters" trio featured in the salute to Bob Hope. � � Mr. Rodriguez - The salute to Bob Hope was featured on the Channel 9 ncws and in a San Gabriel newspaper.
