"Gifts of Love" discussion , i � i � Adiournment ; Motion to adjourn to the regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at i 3:00 p.m. in the City Council Chamber located at 11330 Bullis Road, Lynwood, CA � 90262 ! � j I � � '✓ MINUTES THE SPECIAL MEETING OF NOVEMBER 9 2004 The speciai meeting of the Lynwood Women's Commission of the City of Lynwood, California was held on Tuesday, November 9 at 3:00 p.m. in the City Council Chamber. The agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown Act. - In attendance: Mary Sue Lewis Della Mazziotti Verna Culp Ethel Pacheco Sylvia Herron Also present Lorene Reed, Friend of LWC _ Pearline Calderon, Friend of LWC I Sylvia Ortiz, Friend of LWC Lyn Strienfield, Friend of LWC I Caroi De Jesus, Staff Liaison � Alicia Duarte, Staff person � � ADMINISTRATNE ITEMS i Commissioner Lewis called the meeting to order at 3:12 p.m. Pledge of A�legiance was � lead by Commissioner Herron. The minutes were read and approved with the necessary corrections. ' DISCUSSION ITEMS I i Commissioner Mary Sue Lewis asked if anyone had any questions or comments about � the October event... ' i Commissioner Mazziotti said that she really enjoyed the last two speakers and � everyone agreed that they were excellent. i Commissioner Culp said that there should be calendars for all city events that are going ! on so EvenYs don't conflict and people don't have to leave one event to go to the other. The Commissioners all agreed that there should be better advertisement of the event. I Staff Liaison DeJesus suggested each commissioner bring ten people to future events j to ensure a better crowd. � I i . i I Friend Sylvia Ortiz said that the attendance was not good she said she did not see any school board members or school officials. She also added that Councilmember Maria Santillan suggested that future events be held after people get out of work or on the weekends when not so many people are working. Commissioner Lewis said that more people need to be contacted with enough time in advance, at least two or three weeks before the event. She disagreed with the idea of I having the events on the weekends. She then said that the Commission should start � working on the "Gifts of Love" event. � Commissioner Pacheco said that the first thing that needs to be check is the availability I i if Bateman Hall. � I Friend Calderon had one last comment about the Conference and said that the i commission should look at what was done differently in years past when the attendance ( was etter. DeJesus said that things were hard to put together because a lot of things were not � discussed at the meetings when she was out of town. She also suggested that next � year the event should only be held in one room. � f Friend Reed said that many things were not discussed at the meetings so many things � were done behind the scenes by staff. ' Commissioner Lewis agreed with the idea of having the event in one room so the flow of � the event would be good. She said that the event speakers were very good the only � thing that could have been better was the attendance. She agreed with DeJesus that every Commissioner should bring ten people each so they could have a good size � crowd to start with. ' Friend Ortiz said that they can invite PTA parents as well. ' i Wendy Martinez from the YWCA in Compton introduced herself and said that she would � be attending the regular meetings of the women's commission. She said she was new ; and also works with locai middle schools as well. ' Commissioner Lewis said that is was good to do things differently as information is ' gathered and pianned. I The commission then extended a welcome to Ms. Martinez and invited her to be a I friend of the women's commission, Ms. Martinez accepted. � Commissioner Lewis said that the commission would need help to solicit gifts for the I "Gifts of Love" event. I i DeJesus asked the commission if they would like to look for other places to assist for Christmas besides the Peach and Joy Center. Friend Ortiz said she had an organization in mind the name of the place is "Su Casa" this organization helps women of domestic violence from the Lynwood Community. She explained how victims of domestic violence go outside of the city's then live In because they do not want to run in to there abusers. Commissioner Lewis said that they should not totally abandon whey then have done in the past. She said that they usually have enough toys to help more children even if there are two toys per child. She said that the toys that are donated for this event should only be used for this event. DeJesus asked if the Commission would like to make a motion to try and assist "Su i Casa" as well. I Commissioner Lewis said that anyone from the community should be able to participate. � Friend Reed said she would not mind soliciting but it would be better to give the names ! of the businesses to staff and staff can mail letters to the businesses. i DeJesus said that she did not know if the letter can be in the name of the city, she said ! if should be from the friends. She mentioned to the commission that Shawn Powell � Furillo wouid be donating about 22 toys. She then asked the commission if they would I �ike to make a motion for the friends to solicit toys. � i Commissioner Lewis put this into motion and it was moved and accepted by the I commission. � DeJesus reminded everyone that the commission usually does not invite people from the community to this event because of confidentiality, again she asked about helping � "Su Casa" � I I Friend Reed asked if the commission only helps battered women and children, why not � disabled kids or foster kids? i Commissioner Lewis explained that the LWC chose to help these women and chiidren i year after year, the LWC is known for this specific purpose at there "Gifts of Love" event. � i Friend Reed said she now understood the reason. ; . � Friend Sylvia Herron told everyone that AARP is doing something for the women from j Peach and Joy Center this year, she said that they are putting together some baskets I for them. ; � I The Commission then discussed some further detail about the event such as the date, the food the entertainment (Santa Claus). DeJesus asked if the commission would only be helping the Peach and Joy Center or other organizations as well. Commissioner Lewis asked Friend Ortiz how many children were at the "Su Casa" • . shelter, she was not sure. - ° The Commissioner agreed that first they would need to find out how many children are at the Peach & Joy Center then they could decide if they can help other organizations. The Commission agreed that they would probably have the resources to assist 100 children. Friend Calderon told the commission that she knew of two churches that could use the assistance. � _ FriendReed said that someone should talk to Peach &Joy first to make sure the - commissioner can assist all the children there and everyone agreed. CommissionerLewis told everyone that the things needed to get going for this event ' such as the number of chi{dren and the letters of solicitation. Everyone agreed that Friend Ortiz would sign the letter of solicitation on behalf of the �Friends of the Women's Commission. Commissioner Lewis informed everyone that there would be a call meeting�on November 30, 2004 at 3:00p.m. Regarding the "Gifts of Love" event and any information that gathered � _ ADJOURNMENT , Motion to adjourn to the regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at 3:00 p.m: in the city council chamber, 113,30 Bullis Road, Lynwood, CA 90262
