MINUTES THE SPECIAL MEETING OF Auqust 10, 2004
The special meeting of the Lynwood Women's Commission of the City of Lynwood,
California was held on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. in the City Council
Chamber. The agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown Act.
In attendance:
Verna Culp, Chair
Ethel Pacheco, Vice-Chair
Maria Lopez, Commissioner
Mary Sue Lewis, Commissioner
Della Mazziotti, Commissioner
Also present:
Alicia Duarte, Staff
Crystal Sahagun, Minutes Clerk
Lorene Reed, Friend of LWC
Lyn Steinfield, Friend of LWC
ADMINISTRATIVE ITEMS
Commissioner Culp calied the meeting to order at 3:05 p.m. Pledge of Allegiance was
lead by Commissioner Lewis.
Approval of Minutes:
Commissioner Culp moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting with the
necessary corrections.
DISCUSSION ITEMS
Commissioner Culp told the commissioners that they would be holding the elections of
officers later in the meeting because Commissioner Mazziotti was running late. She
then asked if anyone had any ideas they would like to talk about for the October
Conference.
Commissioner Lewis said that a discussion was started briefly at the last meeting.
� Commissioner Pacheco asked about the date of this event she asked the staff liason if
she knew what date would be available.

Staff person Alicia Duarte told the commissioner that it would be a good idea to choose
two dates so she can see what date is available. She then asked the commission how
long the event usually lasted.
Commissioner Culp then began talking about what kind of topics could be talked akiout
at this event.
Commissioner Lewis said that it would be nice to have a different kind of workshop for
the conference. Something to teach the friends how to raise money; like writing letters
and proposals.
Friend Reed then asked if any of the people that spoke at the NACW conference would
be a good idea for the LWC conference. She said that it would be a good idea to have
an outside speaker rather than a local speaker that people have already heard before.
She suggested to the commission to come up with new topics to talk about because
things like abuse has been talked about so much and schools talk about education so
people have already heard that. She also suggested themes that will empower show
women in the community and show them to stand up for themseives.
Commissioner Culp then began talking about fund raising , she said that the women's
commissioner can not fund raise, but the friends can raise money ad donate to the
commission. The only thing they can not do is use the name of the Lynwood Women's
Commission because the commission is directly under City Council.
Commissioner Lewis then began suggesting topics such as empowering.
Commissioner Culp said that was a good topic to talk about she then asked friends Lyn
& Reed if they had any ideas that they wanted to share.
Friend Reed suggested leadership development.
Commissioner Culp then asked how many workshops then would have for the day of
the event and she also asked everyone to choose a workshop then would like to work
on.
Commissioner Pacheco said she would like to work on fundraising & recruitment,
� Commissioner Lewis would like to work on organizational skills as well as leadership
� development and Commissioner Lopez said she would work on education.
i Commissioner Mazziotti said she would like to work on a topic addressing young
women and teen pregnancy; education on preventing teen pregnancy.
' Staff Liason Duarte then passed out forms for the election of the officers to the
� commissioners.

' Commissioner Culp then let the commissioners know that there term was over this year
�, so they need to write a letter stating why they should remain on the commission.

Everyone then voted on who would be the chair and who would be the vice chair.
Staff collected the ballots and counted them she then read the results to the
commission. The person that receive the most votes for Chair was Commissioner Mary
Sue Lewis she received 4 votes and Commissioner Mazziotti received 2 votes for Vice
chair which made her the winner.
Commissioner Culp then went over some of the details that were discussed for the
October conference. She asked the commissioner if anyone had any comments. She
then told the commissioners that at the next meeting they would have the installment of
the officers. She asked if the commission would like to invite the City Clerk Andrea
Hooper for the instaliment of the new Chair and Vice Chair.
The discussion was then finalized and the commissioners talked about the details then
had decided on for the October Conference.
Commissioner Lopez suggested Women in Politics & Education Commissioner
Mazziotti also liked that topic as well as preventing teen pregnancy. Commissioner
Pacheco said she would work on Fundraising and Recruiting . Commissioner Lewis
would like to talk about organizational skiils and emancipation, Commissioner Culp
would like to talk about politics.
The commission agreed on the theme "Women in Power".
Commissioner Culp suggested that everyone get a speaker in mind pertaining to their
topic to talk about at the next meeting.
Commissioner Culp told the commissioner that they are now members of the California
commission before they were just members of the National . She then explained that
the California women's commission are just friends of the National. She then talked
about the Linda Sanchez event August 6 2004 at the performing arts center.
Staff Liaison Duarte asked if the 2" or 3' Thursday of October wouid be good for their
event, everyone said yes so she said she would find out what date was available.
