Christmas Event Adiournment Motion to adjourn to the regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. in the City Council Chamber located at 11330 Bullis Road, Lynwood, CA 90262 / �` � MINUTES THE SPECIAL MEETING OF OCTOBER 12, 2004 The special meeting of the Lynwood Women's Commission of the City of Lynwood, California was held on Tuesday, October 12 at 3:00 p.m. in the City Council Chamber. . The agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown Act. In attendance: Della Mazziotti Verna Culp Ethel Pacheco Sylvia Herron Also present: Lorene Reed Pearline Calderon, Friend of LWC Rev. Ernestine Fountain, Friend of LWC Andrea Hooper, City Clerk Carol De Jesus, Staff Liaison Alicia Duarte, Staff person ADMINISTRATNE ITEMS Commissioner Mazziotti conducted the meeting due to the absence of Chairperson Mary Sue Lewis who had a death in her family. She called the meeting to order at 3:10 p.m. Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes were read and approved with the following corrections: • Commissioner Mazziotti stated that it would be nice to have some speakers from the LUSD. • Commissioner Pacheco suggested that we should have a narcotic display booth from the L.A. County Sheriff's Department during the conference. She also suggested having health information or testing booth from St. Francis Hospital. ,� .. _�: DISCUSSION ITEMS Andrea Hooper informed the commissioners that they need to meet at the conference room for t Commissioner Mazziotti made a motion to have the minutes approved; seconded by Commissioner Pacheco. Andrea was present at the meeting to swear in the new commissioner Sylvia Herron. She introduced Ms. Herron as the commission's new member and ex-CDBG Commissioner. Andrea explained that the City Council had made a number of changes on various city commissions'. She informed them that every commissioner serving would need to re-apply to serve in the commission every two years. Anyone can be removed at any time and if there is a vacancy the incoming commissioner will only serve for the remainder of the term. She proceeded to swear in Commissioner Herron who then took her seat at the dais. Rev. Ernestine Fountain passed out fliers of the Senior Action Fair that will be held on November 18, 2004 from 9 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the City of Lynwood Bateman Hall Auditorium. She said that her daughter put this program together. All the seniors in the surrounding cities have been invited to the event. She went on to talk about various political discussions. The commissioners expressed to her that it was not the place or time to be discussing such issues. Commissioner Culp informed that there would be a trip to Laughlin to raise funds for the senior programs on November 9&10. Carol passed out the draft agenda for the conference, so that the commissioners could review it. She passed out a copy of the municipal codebook segment on the Lynwood Women's Commission and fliers for the commissioners to give out to their acquaintances. Carol asked the commissioners if they wanted to have men attend the conference. Commissioner Herron suggested to have the fliers mailed out to the men Blockwatch � members so that their wives can attend. Caroi said that they are on our mailing list. ; Carol explained that we would have a booth from the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, , a booth from St. Francis and that we are looking into inviting Rueben Martinez of � Libreria Martinez at Plaza Mexico to have a booth and also Pacific Smiles Dental Office. � Carol reviewed the draft program with the commissioners and explained that Mayor Pro ! Tem Vasquez will help in the Finance session. Ms. Dixon will help in contacting a doctor for the Health session. She informed them that Sgt. Bernice Abram would cover Domestic Violence and Women Personal Safety. She asked the commissioners if they j would like to combine the two discussions but they said they would prefer to keep them , separate. I� � -. _ Carol said she would contact Maria Lopez to find out if she had contacted anyone about speaking on education. � Commissioner Mazziotti asked if the event would be free. Carol explained that since council approved the item at the previous council meeting we did not need to charge for attendance. Continental Breakfast and Lunch would be provided at no charge. Commissioner Mazziotti asked if women from other cities could be invited, Carol said of ' course and we will also invite the women council members from surrounding cities. Carol said they can invite their friends and we plan to have between 150-200 attendees. Carol asked if they would like to have the same moderators as last year, Phyllis Cooper and Sylvia Ortiz. The commissioners expressed their desire to change the moderators to someone else this year. Carol asked if they would like to have Gilda Acosta as a moderator. Commissioner Pacheco agreed. Carol asked if Mayor Pro Tem Vasquez should be the MC since she has helped in putting the event together. Commissioner Culp made a motion and it was seconded by Ethel that the MC be MPT Vasquez. Commissioner Herron suggested that Deborah Jackson be the second moderator. Commissioner Mazziotti said we should invite Evelyn Weils to attend. Lorene Reed suggested Janett Sanchez as the moderator but Commissioner Herron commented that she was working.
