Adjournment — Motion to adjourn to the next regularly Scheduled meeting on TuesdaY, September 13, 20Q5 at 3:p0 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chamber located at 11�30 Bullis Road, Lynwood, CA 90262. `� Minutes for the Regular MeetinE of Julv 12, 2005 The regular meeting of Che Lynwood Women's Commission of the CiCy of Lynwood, California was held on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. The agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown Act, Roll Ca11: Chairperson Mary Sue Lewis - Present � Vice Chairperson Della Mazziotti - Present Commissioner Ethel Pacheco - Present Commissioner Sylvia Herron - Present Commissioner Verna Culp - Absent Also Present: ' Pearline Calderon, Friend�ofaLWC � Jenny Castillo (YWCA) = Perry Brents, Deputy Director, Recreation , Phyllis Cooper-Lyons, Staff Person, Recreation Jean Graham, Minutes Clerk (temporary) Administrative Items: � Chairperson Mary Sue Lewis called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. The pledge of Allegiance was led by Ms. Cooper-Lyons. � Minutes �were read silently. Corrections: On the last page starting with Commissioner � Pacheco.... 8:30 p.m. is the correct time not 2:30 p.m. Minutes were approved as corrected. � . � � - Discussion Items: � � A. Self Defense Class —Commissioner Herron said the class was good. B. October's Event & C. Fall Health Fair are the same events. There was a discussion regarding getting doctors from St. Francis to discuss health issues regarding each part of the body especially diabetes and colon cancer. Dr. Gerald Kozai was suggested as one doctor to contact to speak. Ms. Cooper-Lyons asked is tbis event always held in October. Chairperson Lewis said there are records of all the minutes to tbe meetings. She suggested that Ivls. Cooper-Lyons get them so they will be available to help whoever takes the chair the next time. There should be copies � � here at the City. Phyllis said� she would look in the files she thinks the Ciry Clerk may have copies and/or staff person have copies. She apologized for not keeping up. Chairperson Lewis said she appreciates Ms. Cooper-Lyons being here. Discussion conftnued regarding mental/physical health providers. Friend Calderon said there was a disease that deals with the muscles in the body and maybe we could have someone speak on it. Chairperson Lewis said women should be knowledgeable as to how to take care of our bodies; knowledge is power. Ms. Cooper-Lyons asked do you want speakers regarding women issues or broader aspects of health care. Chairperson Lewis said she wants name of people who would be willing to participate on all levels. She doesn't believe in waiting to the last minute to plan thin�s. We need to check out the calendar at Bateman Hall to see what dates are available. We need the date, presenters and health topics to be discussed. There was discussion regarding having break out sessions in each room at Bateman Hall, the time will be 10:00 a.m. — 2:00 p.m. Chairperson'Lewis suggested one speaker for each topic in each room; colon cancer, diabetes and mental health. Commissioner Herron said we could do menfal healtb at another time. Chairperson Lewis said menta] health in only one issue but could be the main topic. She wants to open the event to other cities as well as Lynwood. Commissioner Herron said Compton has a Mental Health Department and we could get doctors from there for different issues. Jenny (YWCA) apologized for being late she thought the meeting was at 4:00 p.m. She introduced Esperanza who will be coming if she can't make tbe meeting. Mr. Brents said Wednesday, October 26, 2005 is the only date that the Auditorium is open at Bateman Hall for the � C♦ ' ` event. Chairperson Lewis said that is the date we will hold the event; decorations will be fall colors, there will be a continental breakfast or lunch whichever we decide. Jenny asked if we could add Post Dramatic Stress Disorder because women who have been raped especially women of color, the disorder is not recognized. Could we have someone to do a presentation on it? Is there a time limit. Chairperson Lewis said there would be a time limit; Commissioner Herron said on Tuesday there was a 20 � minute break between sessions. Friend Calderon said we could have a session on the grieving process. Chairperson Lewis said she thought that would come under post dramatic stress disorder. Everyone should Yhink of a name for the event and come � back next month with ideas. Mr. Brents said the December Gifts of Love is a cbariry � event and he needs direction to do a solicitation letter for it. Chairperson Lewis said we can get in-kind gifts. Jenny said it would be nice if there were fruit baskets to give away which she volunteered to prepare. E. Ms. Cooper-Lyons said she got on line to see when the NACW Conference would be starts July 13, through July 17, 2005 in Florida. We will plan better next year when it will be held in Texas. We will follow proper procedures. Commissioner Mazziotti said the council was the reason they couldn't go this year. Ms Cooper-Lyons said the membership dues for the NACW are due and they will let her know how much we owe. It is a very vital group and we need to continue supporting them. Commission Orals: Chairperson Lewis said she is excited about Phyllis and Perry working with them; they are good people to work with. She said we should pcay for our leaders of the country and the people. They have to follow rules and regulations. She asked what about the $50 stipend for May, June and July. Mr. Brents said he will go back and � check on it and when it will be processed. He asked who was at the meetings on � May, June and he knows who is here today. Chairperson Lewis said if you miss three times you are gone unless you have an excused absence. Mr. Brents asked what is the protocol is it to call Board Members with a reminder that the meeting is on the 2" Tuesday of each month at 3:00 p.m. Friend Calderon said thaf Carol called the board SI • t�. ' ' members and the friends. The consensus was that they get the Agenda and Minutes � in the mail so they were not sure a call is necessary but that it would be nice. He � - suggested they call the board members and have them call the friends of the commission because we do not have all the telephone numbers of the friends. Commissioner Herron said we need to decide on the food for the October event. Mr. Brents made an announcement about the Senior Advisory Board Annual Tea which will be held on Sunday, August 7, 2005 at Bateman Hall from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Adjournment — Motion to adjourn to the next regularly scheduled meeting to be held � � at 3:00 p.m. on August 9, 2005 in the City Hall Council Chamber, ll 330 Bullis Road, Lynwood CA 90262.
