ADJOURNMENT , y � _. ,� COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES FOR SEPTEMBER 21, 2005 L OPENING CEREMONIES a. CALL TO ORDER - The meeting was called to order at 5:04 p.m. b. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE - The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by Commissioner Garcia. c. CERTIFICATION OF AGENDA POSTING - The agenda was duly posted for the September 21, 2005 meeting as prescribed by the Brown Act. e. APPROVAL OF PAST MINUTES - Chairperson Amey called for a motion to approve the minutes for July and August 2005. Vice Chairperson Lopez motioned that the minutes be approved. Commissioner Garcia seconded the motion; the minutes were unanimously approved and the motion was carried. II. INFORMATION ITEMS a. City Council Items - • The City Council will review a Request for Proposal for security companies for Lynwood city parks. • Council approved Community/Transit Center roof repair about three weeks ago. Recreation staff will be housed for approximately one month at Bateman Hall along with the Sr. Food Program. b. General City Program Report - Upcoming events include: • Emergency Meeting for Hurricane Relief - There will be a meeting tonight at Bateman Hall beginning at 6:00 p.m. Approximately 157 evacuees will be arriving in Lynwood from Texas next Monday. Their main needs will be housing and jobs. The evacuees will be spread throughout Los Angeles with several coming to the Resurrection Life Christian Center on Fernwood Avenue. Many fundraisers are planned to help raise funds to assist the hurricane victims including: o Afundraisingdinner o Basketball tournament � o Locai restaurants are donating part of their meal profits during specified time periods o There will be a professional wrestling match at Lynwood High School in early October o Bateman Hall will host Monday Night Football Games with the admission fee going to o hurricane relief o A community barbeque is planned for 10/8 at Los Amigos Park o Swim-a-thon at the Natatorium o Car wash on 10/22 at carwash located @ 11316 Atlantic Avenue � o Soccer tournament o Red Cross blood drive on 11/4 Vice Chairperson Lopez inquired as to how the money is being handled. Mr. Given responded that the money is being deposited into a special city account. The money will then be distributed to the evacuees that are staying in Lynwood. Chairperson Amey asks how long fundraising for tlie evacuees will continue. Mr. Given states that the City will focus on raising funds for hurricane relief at least until the end of the year. Money will be distributed as it is received. Vice Chairperson �opez commented that local organizations are doing a betterjob than the Red Cross at addressing the immediate needs of the evacuees. Mr. Given announced that Ms. Sylvia Ortiz is working with the Armory in Lynwood to collect and sort through clothing donations. a Senior Citizens Program Report - � • Trip to Pechanga Resort on 9/22 � r p C ' . 'c - .7- . • County Fair Trip on 9/28 � • Visit from Congresswoman Linda Sanchez.on 10/3 at Bateman Hall to invite Seniors to Health Fair in Cerritos on 10/10 • Pancake breakfast on 10/5 & 10/6 to raise funds for hurricane relief and the senior center • Great Gatsby Dinner Dance on 10/20 d. Library Report � None e. Human Relations Mutual Assistance Consortium (H.R.M.A.C.) Report - Meeting on hate crimes on 9/20 at the Hollywood Sheriff's Station. Transportation will be provided. Chairperson Amey and Commissioner Garcia will attend. III. SCHEDULED MATTERS - � a. Review National Night Out - Ms. Calderon commends Commissioner McKinney for the greatjob she did at recruiting participants for National Night Out. Commissioner McKinney states she could not have done it without the help of the core committee and Recreation staff support. b. Community "Cooling-Off° Station Update - During the hottest part of the Summer months, the Senior Services Division has provided senior citizens with the opportunity to enjoy cool refreshments and a movie in room #1 of the Community Center. c. Joint Task Force Update - Mayor Ramon Rodriguez and Ms. Guadalupe Rodriguez, President of the School Board have set-up a joint task force committee to deal with gangs and violence in the city of Lynwood. The committee, chosen by Mayor Rodriguez is made up of teachers, block watch captains, P.T.A. members, law enforcement and probation officers. Sub-committees will focus on areas of Lynwood where there are currently no block watch captains. , d. Tolerance Project Update - The City Manager is excited to promote and educate the community through diversity training. This topic will be discussed at the 10/4/05 Council meeting. e. Commissioner Request for Fundraising Trip to King Tut Exhibit - Reported that the King Tut exhibit is booked until the end of October. IV. PUBLIC ORALS - Please adhere to the three-minute time limit. Ms. Pearline Calderon, resident at 4010 Josephine Street came by to recommend `drive-alongs° at the Police Academy. Meetings are held on Monday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. for 12-weeks. The Academy does a background check on guests before they can participate in the program. She stated that iYs good for youth to see adults interact with police officers. Both Mr. Given and Vice Chairperson Lopez have attended the Police Academy in the�past, with Vice Chairperson Lopez attending the very first session. Ms. Calderon mentioned that she can provide a guest speaker for H.R.M.A.C. meetings. She thanks Commissioner McKinney for a photo of the National Night Out event. Ms. Calderon also stated that Congresswoman Juanita McDonald would like to invite our community to a criminal justice summit on 10/1 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Grant AME Church in Los Angeles. There will be discussion on crime, safety and justice issues. Congresswoman McDonald is also extending an invitation to the 1� Annual Cultural Diversity Celebration on 10/15 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park in Long Beach. V.
