Tolerance Project - Mr. Given stated that the City Manager is still looking at information on this ' project and that he will bring the City Manager's recommendations back to the Commission once approved. The next step would be to get organizations to agree to work together, pool resources and arrange for diversity training. One observation of this project is the fact that pre-school and , elementary school aged children are generally o.k. and do fine. Racial problems begin during the Jr. High and High School years. Commissioner McKinney stated that diversity training is very beneficial in helping to promote racial tolerance. Issues beyond race, color, and ethnicity must be addressed. We must try to get various agencies to work together in a collaborative effort to receive training. The whole city should get involved including; St. Francis Medical Center, Lynwood Unified School District, the PTA, City of Lynwood, and parents. Resources must be pooled to assist in developing training programs. Mr. Given stated that classes could be opened up to the public so that all age groups receive training in racial tolerance. Commissioner McKinney shares that in her experience she has found that Hispanics that are born in America are not tolerant of those that immigrate to this I country. Chairperson Amey stated that children learn many of these negative behaviors from their parents. She had her neighbors gather at her home in order to break-up misconceptions about one another.
