MEETING MINUTES FOR
JANUARY 24, 2005
I. CALL TO ORDER: ChairpersonJohn Beimer called the Veterans Affairs
Council meeting to order at 5:07 p.m.
II. INVOCATION: Board Member Charles Wood gave the Invocation.
III. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Vice Chairperson Jones led the Pledge of
Allegiance.
IV. ROLL CALL:

V. AGENDA POSTING: Chairperson Beimer confirmed that the agenda was
posted by the City Clerk for the January zoo5 meeting. !
VI. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Chairperson Beimer requests a vote on the I
minutes for the November zooq meeting. There was no December meeting. Vice I
Chairperson Jones motions that the minutes be approved. Board Member Wood �
seconds the motion. All members vote unanimously for approval of the minutes. '

VII. INFORMATION ITEMS: Mr. Art Hernandez, Recreation Coordinator ,
introduced himself as Mr. Leo Rodriguez's replacement. He has taken over Mr. �
Rodriguez's responsibilities due to the fact that Mr. Rodriguez has retired from �
I
City service. In March, Mr. Hernandez will have been employed with the city of +
Lynwood for i7 years. He will start planning this year's Veterans Day Program. i
VIII. SCHEDULED MATTERS: The Veterans Affairs Council discussed the Senior
Center. Chairperson Beimer stated that he attended a planning meeting where
Mr. Yadi Farhadi passed out plans for the future Senior Cencer. Chairperson
Beimer mentioned that there is not enough money to complete this project. The �
City owes Mr. Omar Maloof, a friend of Chairperson Beimer's, a large sum of �
money for construction work he has done. Chairperson Beimer stated that the �
veterans as well as the senior citizens have been after money for projects for a '
number of years. Chairperson Beimer also mentioned new senior housing over �
storefronts on Long Beach Boulevard. More security is required for anyone living ,
in this area due to gang activity. �

IX. PUBLIC ORALS: Frank Calderon, ¢oio Josephine in Lynwood commented that
there is a new national commander for the American Legion. He is also hard at
work on the following issues:
✓ Eliminate financial status testing required for Veterans medical care �
✓ Provide only the last four (4� digits of Social Security Number and
not the whole number
✓ Abolish medical co-payments ,
X. BOARD MEMBER ORALS:
➢ JONES - Stated that the street lights that startled Chairperson Beimer were
made possible by the Safety Council. (see comment by Chairperson Beimer)
➢ WOOD - No comment
➢ FORD - No comment '
➢ FIELDS - Absent
➢ PEREZ - Stated that a fundraiser was held for tsunami victims at Plaza Mexico
on i/2z/o5.
➢ MENDOZA - Commented that there were thousands of people at the
fundraiser.
➢ REED - Absent
➢ WILLIAMS - Absent
> BEIMER - Ment.ioned he was startled by the flashing lights on the street �
surface on Martin Luther King Boulevard. �
XI. ADJOURNMENT - The Veterans Affairs Council will adjourn for the holidays. I
