PRIORITY BUSINESS
Technology Update
Barbara Lavoine, Director of Technology, presented information to the Committee relative to Technology
hardware in the District. Her presentation included the Technology Inventory for the District and the
Technology Achievements 2014 -2019 . She reviewed the inventory and explained the life expectancy of
equipment, how and if it is replaced . She shared many achievements through the years that the District has
made in the field of Technology that included implementation strategies, integration and literacy, professional
development, and accessibility of technology in our schools .
She indicated that they are hoping to have Open Cape in all buildings in the next year or so . She indicated that
presently 8 firewalls are being managed in the District. She indicated that they are trying to get the most out of
every piece of technology and are very sensitive to budget issues . Her goal is to maintain an appropriate refresh
rate . She also indicated that they are trying to get five years out of devices, instead of four years . Every year
she meets with the building Principals to look at the budget . She also explained that when equipment becomes
obsolete, it is declared surplus by the school committee and she calls a company to take it away . She reviewed
some of the applications and costs , noting that most vendors are sensitive to the fact that the school is a non-
profit . As far as back up, she indicated that Storage Craft sits on the back of the Network next to the filer server
and is uploaded to storage location in the cloud. She indicated that the District will have a wide area network in
about a year and a half and that they have been working with Open Cape . Her staff has done a good job putting
the pieces together.
Commitment to Apple products was explained in that Apple supports more apps . Chrome Books does not
support some of the applications . Apple is recognizing its competition and continues to adjust its pricing: The
Technology Subcommittee spent a lot of time determining what the best educational device was . They
evaluated both Apple and Chrome Book and decided that Apple has more capabilities to be creative . There are
limitations on the Chrome Books and the District does so much more than use Google apps . The subcommittee
chose Apple because of the life of the battery ( 10 hours in a day) , easy on/off, and robust library of applications
available for users . (that does not exist in the Chrome Book)
