HomeMy Public PortalAbout01-14-2014 RFI - Vinnie_201401161102234502January 14, 2014 Request for Information: Data on students living in large multi -unit developments From: Vincent Piccirilli Over the past year, the concern has been raised in the community that new large multi -unit residential developments, either approved or proposed, will bring an influx of students into the Watertown Public Schools that will overwhelm our existing facilities. This concern was raised most recently at the School Committee meeting on January 6th I believe that it is important that the Town Council has some actual data to be able to evaluate and address this concern in a responsible manner. Since there are already many large multi -unit residential developments in Watertown, the current distribution of students living in these developments could be used to forecast students in new developments. Thus, I am making the following request for information: For existing large multi -unit residential developments, please provide: • The number of units in each development broken down by type (studio, 1 -bedroom, 2 -bedroom, 3 - bedroom) and ownership (rental or condo) • The number of students in each development that were registered in the WPS system as of October 1, 2013 broken down by classification (elementary level, middle school, high school, or out -of -district) With this data, it should be possible to develop a forecasting model of new students at each level, based on the mix of unit types. Please provide this forecast for each new development that is either under construction, or proposed. I also request that this analysis be updated annually. The larger the sample, the more accurate the forecast, so suggestions for data collection on existing large multi- unit residential developments include: • Charlesbank Apartments (120 Pleasant St) • Riverbank Lofts (290 Pleasant St) • Repton Place Phase 1 (3/4/5 Repton Circle) • Archstone Apartments (20 Watertown St) • Waterbridge Condominiums (50 Watertown St) • Newtown Condominiums (164 Galen St/10 Williams St) • Hamilton Place (245 Main St &16/24/32 Whites Ave) • Whitney Tower (275 Main St) • Horizon East (125 Coolidge Ave) • Charles River Terrace (131/151 Coolidge Ave) • Crossroads on the Charles (199 Coolidge Ave) • Wateridge (225/227/229/231 Coolidge Ave) • Spring House Apartments (31 Spring St) • Oakley Court (550 Belmont St) • Apaitinents at 805 Mt Auburn St As always, the Department of Community Development & Planning and the School Department should work together to determine what data to collect and the optimal way to present it. Thank you
