RE: Appointment of Town Engineer
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Shuman, P.E. to the position of Town
Engineer, effective June 23, 2014.
Mr. Shuman has a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering and a Master of Engineering
(Civil and Environmental) from Cornell University. He is also a Registered Professional
Engineer with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with almost ten years of Massachusetts
public sector service. Mr. Shuman is actively involved with the Boston Society of Civil
Engineers and has volunteered with the Mystic River Watershed Association in various
capacities.
Mr. Shuman has been the Assistant Town Engineer for the Town of Winchester. He has
additional municipal experience as a Project Manager for the City of Melrose Department of
Public Works and as a Civil/Environmental Engineer with the Town of Bedford Department of
Public Works. Previous to the last ten years of public sector service, Mr. Shuman performed
engineering services in the private sector from June 1999 to July 2004.
With Mr. Shuman's extensive experience and education background, he will be able to
greatly assist the Department of Public Works in all aspects of the overall operation of the
department performing professional engineering work, including plan review; capital projects
planning; Stormwater management review; inspections; policies, procedures and specifications;
technical assistance; GIS technology; asset management and facilities management.
The process of selecting a Town Engineer included the very much appreciated assistance of
Gerald S. Mee, Jr., Superintendent, Department of Public Works, Steven Magoon, Community
Development and Planning Director and Gayle Shattuck, Personnel Director.
