Woodland District D Councilor Watertown Town Council Administration Building 149 Main Street Watertown, MA 02472 Phone: 617-972-6470 Resolution # WHEREAS: Anthony "Tony" Basile is a life-long resident of Watertown and attended Watertown Public Schools. WHEREAS: Tony served our Country with honor and distinction for four and a half years in World War II. While in the Army, Tony landed on the beaches of Normandy, France; fought in General Patton's Third Army at the Battle of the Bulge; WHEREAS: Tony received a Purple Heart after being wounded at the Battle of Metz in 1944; WHEREAS: After recovering from his wounds, Tony received the Bronze Star for bravery for his role in laying communication wire while coming under machine gun fire and mortar attacks. Tony and his unit were forced to fight off a German Patrol in order to complete their assignment, which likely saved the lives of many other service members that day. WHEREAS: Prior to leaving for the War, Tony married the love of his life, Mary. They have lived on Worcester Street for 70 years with (Mary now deceased). Tony has two children, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren that call him "Great", which is appropriate considering Tony's service to our Country; and, WHEREAS: On July 12, 2014, Tony reached the milestone of 95 years young; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: In recognition of Tony's distinguished service to his Country and his life-long residency in Watertown, that the City known as the Town of Watertown hereby honors Anthony Basile by naming the corner of Worcester Street and Springfield Street "Anthony "Tony" Basile Square." Council Member I hereby certify that at a regular meeting of the Town Council for which a quorum was present, the above resolution was adopted by unanimous voice vote on July 15, 2014.
