Subject: Councilor Kounelis Request (LED Lights in Coolidge Square)
Dear Sir:
In response to your request for an update on the subject, I offer the following:
As you know, a request was made by Councilor Kounelis, followed up with a few telephone conversations, to have some
LED lights installed in Coolidge Square to test the lighting situation.
On numerous occasions since the request, I spoke to Mr. George Woodbury (consultant working with Watertown and
Arlington overseeing the LED Retrofits) about finding the right light fixture that would retrofit to the existing light fixture
in that area. Given the complexity of the style light fixture in Coolidge Square, it has proven to be a challenge for Mr.
Woodbury to immediately respond to me with what type fixture can be retrofitted. During the time given to Mr.
Woodbury to come up with a plan of action, the DPW has identified available funds to finance the work.
During my last conversation with Mr. Woodbury on Tuesday, July 17th and upon my return from vacation, he mentioned
sending someone from his team to Coolidge square to provide him with feedback on the light fixtures. I have yet to hear
back since our last conversation and an email I sent earlier today.
I will continue to update you as information becomes available.
Regards,
Raeleen

Please know that today Councilor Kounelis called my office to request that 1 speak with Gerry Mee about having a "test
sample" of LED lights installed at Coolidge Square. I contacted Mr. Mee and we discussed what type of light pole and
fixture might be needed in that area and also talked about funding the additional work. I indicated that I would call the
installer, which I did, and ask for assistance with this request. George Woodbury of Republic ITS reported that the style
pole in Coolidge Square are "shorter" than average poles with "shoe -box" style fixtures. Mr. Woodbury indicated that
he would need a couple of weeks to research available retrofits for the particular light fixture and would report back to
me with the cost and timeline for the installation.
Please know too that I did receive a call from a resident inquiring why not all the lights were retrofitted. The simplest
answer is that funding only allowed for retrofit to just over half of the Town Owned lights. Neighborhoods of high
density and population were chosen for retrofits from East to West of Town. The main thoroughfares were not part of
the retrofits as these lights are larger and more costly to retrofit. Mr. Woodbury is working on his final report to the
Town of the streets lights that were retrofitted this round. I requested that Mr. Woodbury provide the Town with a list
and cost estimate for the remaining lights in Town for Its future use.
Moments ago I spoke with Councilor Kounelis and reported to her the above. I will report further as more information is
available.
Regards,
Raeleen

RE: Ongoing Sewage and Drainage issues on Keith Street
Dear Mr. Mee,
up-
yiae
I would like to draw your attention to the drainage conditions that exist on Keith Street at #26 and #27
which has been well documented with your office over the years. In particular we need to address the
sewage back up issue at this location.
Many times we have had to call your office to have someone come out and take care of the cleaning of
the sewer. This past winter while we were on vacation there was sewage backup that ended up In our
basement again at 27 Keith Street. My son, Mark Pettiglio, notified me In Florida at which time I called
your department concerning this matter. Men from your department cleaned the main sewer backup
and my son cleaned the basement.
This sewage and drainage problem has been an ongoing Issue since day one. Our property at 27 Keith
Street was built in 1966, my wife and I raised our children here from the day it was built and we
continue to live here today. During this time we have had to call your department repeatedly to try and
alleviate these problems.
Just recently, on December 21, 2011, we had to call because we had a back up in our basement again.
Someone from your department did come to clear It up. The point Is we had to call again for someone
to come out. This is an ongoing issue and something must be done to rectify it. At the very least the
sewer and drain should be checked on a regular basis by your department. I know years ago it was
checked daily; perhaps checking it on a monthly basis would keep the drain from backing up into our
basement.
In conclusion, I am requesting your consideration in granting us some relief. The drainage and sewage
system need to be reconstructed. The manhole Itself Is in disrepair with bricks failing Into it. We have
been quite patient in dealing with this messy Issue but feel It is time that the town took responsibility for
providing us with proper sewer and drainage systems.
